Thanks Edward. I will look you up for those o-rings. I have two new rockets, one using an M motor and the other is a two stage 54 mm motors on it so I do not want to jeopardize their… Read more»

I have extra o-rings that will fit 54mm and 75mm – let me know and I can get them to you before your flight.Usually white crystals appear on the surface of the propellant. You sand that off and you will… Read more»

Thanks for the info. guys. Can you purchase just o-ring kits from the motor mfg’s? If the grains have oxidation going on what will it look like?

Most propellants will swell slightly and pick up moisture. Replacing the o-rings is just cheap insurance against them swelling or becoming deformed during storage – especially if the grease used is not 100% compatible with the elastomer. For a flight… Read more»

Edward’s got a lot more experience than me on this, but my experience (at least in Colorado’s excessively dry climate) is the motors will be fine. I’ve flown multiple Aerotech blue thunder motors (29mm) that had been stored fully assembled… Read more»

I would seal them tightly in a bag so no moisture can ger in. Then when you go to fly them I would disassemble and replace the o-rings with new ones.Edward

Hello, NCR contest director here… I think we should just carry over all the contests, except for the upscale contest which had no real interest. So I propose for 2013 we have the:AlphabetFat Gand various Altitude PokerChad

I would vote to carry over. Normally I know it’s get it done early in case of cancelled launches, but this year has obviously been unreasonably bad for flying.

It appears that the main difficulty will be getting motors, since neither Joe nor Jon will be able to make it to Hartsel on the 20th or 21st. So if you need motors, please contact them now and make arrangements… Read more»

Thanks. Using RockSim, it did not appear the bird would reach 88fps until about 20′. I had heard that it was good to be at least 88fps before leaving the rail. With motor burn being 12.8 seconds, the last thing… Read more»

If your fins are not effective by 88fps (60 mph), then they might be too small. 44fps is the generally accepted minimum speed to leave the rail at, and if a 16′ rail gives you 88fps, you should be more… Read more»

Maybe 75 fps. I have to look again and I am not at the computer with the data on it.

I’ve rarely seen a 20′ rail. How fast is it going after 15′? With a 5:1 ratio you should be good in calm conditions on even 12′.Edward

What if I thought I needed 20′? Let’s say so the rocket is doing at least 88 fps by the time it leaves the rail.

Ed Dawson replied to the topic "Length of launch rails" – 6 years, 7 months ago
We can connect multiple rails if needed. So, 14ft-16ft is possible. We got ya covered.Ed

16′ is the longest – two 8′ sections joined by plates.Edward
