Interesting…I use the 206 slow hardener with west, never tried anything else…

Thats interesting the 205 fast hardener for west systems that ive used actually has a redish tinge and makes the expoxy red color when liquid but dries clear.

Interesting…I’ve never used aeropoxy, but the ones I’ve used are West (starts clear, ends clear) and Pro-set (starts amber [orange hardener, crystal clear resin] and goes clear as it cures).

Hmmm… Aeropoxy turns clear. Surprised me. Good stuff.

No, I haven’t seen what you described. The West Systems is clear for both resin and hardner. I was sort of kidding about being surprised because all the stuff I had used was an amber color.Doug

Doug, the Aeropoxy I got from Tim Thomas of GLR was a cloudy blue resin and a pretty deep red hardner… then became clear as it began to set. Is this similar to West? You mentioned that you were surprised… Read more»

Well… I did only a little bit of this in the late 80’s… and now it’s time to really get into it. I’ll epoxy my fins to the motor mount this week (on my future L3 bird), then I’ll layup… Read more»

(I kind of found it weird that West Sytems was clear!) I use the 125/229 combo and sometimes the extra long working time 237 hardner, pot life 6 hours! (requires post cure). I use the thin resin and if I… Read more»

I use pro-set almost exclusively for my carbon work as well. I use 125/226, which gives a nice combination of strength, high tg, and easy to work with, but many other combos are availible. I post cure at 180f for… Read more»

I do vacuum bagging but I prefer Pro-Set epoxies. Its made from the same company as West Systems but it has a variety of different resins with different viscocities as well as the different hardners. Some of the slowest cure… Read more»

Ahh – I see. That stuff. I don’t use it right now because I have no need to and it’s expensive. I may use it in the future though 🙂

From my understanding, Aeropoxy makes 2 standard epoxies, one for bonding and one for composite layup… AND they make a high temp epoxy that does have a Tg of 500 degrees. It is only available in small premeasured containers and… Read more»

Aeropoxy is not a 500 degree epoxy, unless you have some stuff I am unfamiliar with. As far as I know, aeropoxy is only good to 200 degrees or so, which is still far better than west at around 120.

Conway Stevens replied to the topic "Seamless Composite finishes" – 6 years, 10 months ago
Correct Thats why I use low temp oven for such need when using the west systems (this also makes a difference as to which hardener you use as I only use slow). Only need to be about 100 to 110… Read more»

I’ve been told it’s bad JuJu to heat West Systems up over 125 degrees to accelerate the cure. It gives off bubbles of hydrogen that cause pocking in the finish. Other epoxies are intended to be heat cured. I believe… Read more»
