Can a AP motor be airstarted without electronics? What Im wondering is if its possible to start the upper motor on a 2 stage by filling it with thermolite or black powder and having it touch the lower motors ejection cap with the delay drilled out.
Would the thermolite light quick enough or fall out? Would filling a AP motor with BP explode?
Thanks
Give it a try! 😉
UST DO IT! 🙂
Lots of reasons why this would not be a good idea, the biggest one that comes to mind right off that bat is fire hazard. The physical characteristics of most AP motors and how they ignite make this not only risky but very unreliable, and to some extent unsafe. When you start getting into mid and high power stages or air-starts, electronics are the way to go.

Well safety first. I wouldnt ever want to do anything that could be a hazzard to anyone. Only reason I want to try this is on a minimum diameter 24mm rocket with 2 E's where electronics may be too big for this size of body tube.
The Perfectflite mini and micro timers should fit your application. The mini will light anything if you've got enough battery. The weight penalty of the batteries would be the problem if you're going for an altitude record or something.

Ill have to give those a try. A least they are cheap enough if you loose one. I may even try a AP lower stage to a BP upper.
