Im building my min dia 54 for MHM and would like to use the Cesaroni Pro54 but don't want to use a aft motor retainer. I was thinking of using epoxy to mount a forward bulkhead to the motor casing and then mount the bulkhead to the body tube with pins or screws for removal later. Anyone see a problem with this approach or have a better solution for forward motor retention with the Pro cases? -Sean ❓
Epoxy the bulkhead in where the top of the longest casing will be. Then, just use an eyebolt, or eyenut with allthread to go through the bulkhead into the threaded closure.
Ooops. Forgot the Pro54 doesn't have a threaded front. I guess you're either stuck with a slimline or friction-fit. I really wouldn't try to epoxy anything to the motor casing.

Friction fitting with tape really works quite well. I used to scoff at doing that, but I've probably done it over 100 times now... I seldom have a choice due to the fact that I fly minimum diameter almost exclusively.
For what it is worth, I friction fit the motor on my 3 inch "M" shot last year (30,000', woo-hoo!!!!) and it worked like a charm. I hesitated to do that, but due to the design, I had no choice. The motor didn't move a single millimeter.
A real key is to not use too much black powder in your ejection charge. If you overdo it, you might kick the casing.
What motor are you going to use? Sounds like an altitude shot?
Im looking at the L730 or the K590 Dual Thrust for my altitude shot. I only have my L1 so I was going to do my L2 Cert flight on something a little less exciting. I want to keep my options open for the casings because I will probably try to fly the thing on one of Frank Kosdon's L3000 (43" case) specials for some real zip. I was trying to figure out what to do for my L2 and got bit by the min. diameter bug. That things contagious because it spread to some of the other NCR guys and we decided to go in together and purchase a Shock 2-stager from Dave Triano - we plan on flying it at BALLS - its a 54 min dia 2 stage L3000 to L3000 😀
BALLS is a great event. Who is all going this year? I think I'll pass, as it overlaps Oktoberfest and comes dangerously close to interfering with elk season this year.........
I've got a 54mm rocket that I have flown many times on L330s and K250s. I've toyed with an L730 but that much velocity has inherent challenges.
