Hello,
I just purchased my first Mid power rocket kit (Aerotech Initiator) and am looking for a place to fly. Although I have not yet attended a launch event, I think NCR has exactly what I am looking for in a club. I do have a quick question in reference to the launch schedule. If I join NCR, will I be able to launch any day of the week? For example, let's say I have an urge to head up after work and launch on a Tuesday. Is that permitted? I have my own equipment, which I would bring with me. I apologize if this question has already been answered. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to meeting everyone at a future event!
I believe I can answer some of your questions. As long as you are launching a "G" or smaller motor, you can fly anywhere that is allowed.
As for launching at either of our launch sites, you cannot launch at those locations except at scheduled launch events. You are always welcome to fly with us. If you are a Tripoli or NAR member you can fly. If not, one of the club members will have to sponsor your flights. I ocassionally fly "G" motors when I am testing things and I fly in a large vacant subdivison or in a friends field. There have never been any issues, so far. I know that I am not going to try it now thou, especailly with the fire ban in place, but otherwise I fly. If I am wrong in any of my comments, I am quite confidant that someone will quickly set me straight, so just keep looking for replies.
Unfortunately, from a Club perspective, you may only launch on official launch days due to our permit from the National Forest Service who administers Pawnee National Grasslands. That, plus our negotiated waiver with the FAA means that your flights are only covered by national club insurance (whether NAR or TRA) on official launch dates WITH USFS authorization. That said, you can fly G-motors and under SO LONG as no fire ban is in effect... as you can do almost anywhere on Federal Land.

PS: I should say that the waiver only matters if you are flying H motors (or a bird over 3.3# or over 5000' AGL altitude) and above - it affects the club's access to the site and possible insurance coverage should an accident occurs. Flying during a fire ban or on dates when the club does NOT have an approved launch date can screw up the club. We have the best waiver altitudes in Colorado (20K with 35K windows) - let us NOT jeapardize that.
Thank you both for the helpful info! For the time being, I will be using mostly F20-4W motors from Aerotech (I am still waiting for my first order to come in). And I was not aware you can launch G an under motors on Federal land. Unfortunately, at this time, that does not seem possible due to the wildfires/fire ban. At this point, I think the best thing for me is to stop by one of the scheduled launch events to see how things work.
In terms of the sponsorship, if I am flying G and lower motors, will I still need a sponsorship to fly on scheduled launch events?
Again, thank you for your help and info!
A Quick howdy and Welcome and slight correction to information previously provided. You need not be a member of NCR to fly rockets with us but you will need to be a member of NAR or TRA to fly high power with any club, including NCR. Club membership is appreciated and makes sense once you've found the right Home club - all depends on your interests.
NCR is absolutely the BEST club in Colorado for any level! My friend, you are about to become a part of a family, which includes the whole state, btw. You will be blown away by what you see AND what you can do here! Safety is one of the top ONE of the things we stress. However, you have no idea of how many sponsors (and friends) you have available. NCR? Good choice! I waited 37 years to find the right club to fly! WELCOME!
For what it is worth, you do not have to fly on federal land. I fly in parking lots, school yards, etc. Depends on where you live. I know of a spot near my house that is several hundred acres. I fly there sometimes. If you are in Fort Collins, you can sometimes fly at the CSU football stadium parking lot. A large church normally has a playground and parking lot that you can fly off of. I think it just depends on where you live and how creative you are! Come on out to one of the launches, even though they are canceled for the foreseeable future due to the fire ban. I think I was laboring under the impression, as far as sponsorship is concerned, that if you wanted to fly and you are not a NAR or TRA member, then you need a sponsor for your flights, but, I may be wrong. Joe, "El Presidente" and damn fine guy will know this for sure.
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I will definitely be coming out to a launch soon. I am not sure if I can make the 7-7 launch (I am trying to change my work schedule; I am also about a 2 hour drive from the launch site). If I cannot make the July launch, I will definitely be there in August.
Sorry for the barrage of questions, but I do have one more:
Do vendors regularly attend launches? I purchased my first order of motors online, but I would prefer to support local vendors if possible. I have read about people purchasing their motors at the event, as opposed to obtaining them beforehand.
I look forward to meeting all of you!
Aaron
Joe "El Presidente" Hinton is the motor guy for Giant Leap Rocketry and he has motors, E's and up. Jon Skuba owns Cool Rocket Stuff and normally has A's thru F's. Both are normally at all launches. If you go out to a launch like the July launch, you might be the only one there because of the fire ban. Of course, if others show up, you could drink some beer and talk about how much fun it would have been to launch rockets.

I'll keep my eye on this site for any news about the upcoming launch. I just finished painting my Initiator and finally received my F20-s in the mail, so I am ready to go!
