I've installed them in the past. Digging and some cement work is needed. If anyone has a back hoe (and knows how to use it) it's a piece of cake.
Wonder if they're any second hand ones around? Does the forest service have any?
Seems like a lot of traffic not rocket related goes through. Yet, it'd be good PR if we set one in.
We'd have to get buy in from the ranchers too.
A cattle guard would require a double gate, a change in the ditch and culvert at the gate... probably a non-starter with the Forest Service, but it would be worth asking.

In previous discussions with the Forest Service it was pointed out that the county owns the road at that intersection, so a cattle guard would be managed by the county DOT. FS did not want to get involved with that one.
A gate is a simpler issue as it's pretty much just the FS and local residents.
How's that joke go? The Director of Homeland Security was appalled to learn there are over 7500 cattle guards in Colorado and he wanted them all fired and the Human Resource Administrator said they would need six months for re-training and re-assignment.
Joe, I have tried unsuccessfully to stop smiling since you posted the above message, but I can't. 😉
