Oktober skies are about the optimum for this galactic peeper. Way Kool!!!
I haven't got out my scope in awhile (8" cass) so if there is interest and the skies are forecast to be clear I can bring it up. There is some great stuff to see this time of year...
Not to trump you, boys -- but we have a -8 Iridium flare scheduled for the BALLS launch at Black Rock.... I can't wait. I'm sitting in DIA now, headed for Reno later tonight.
I'm hoping to eke into the 5 mile club on my M boost tomorrow. That rocket is on the the playa right now, thanks to Elvis. I'll be out there to prep early tomorrow morning, and if all goes well I'll be in the air by noon. I've never tried to keep surface mounted fins on a 98mm project. This will be a real test of my building skills. I'm going on an M1939.
I'll post back Sunday or Monday. Not a lot of web service on the playa, though someone did bring a dish 2 years ago.
Gerlach has better high speed Internet than many towns or cities of over 200,000 population thanks to the Burning Man crowd. Supposedly they even have facilities to beam VERY high speed data out to the playa, although I'm sure some sort of local Wifi distribution gear needs to be had. Burning Man, Inc. paid to bring it into Gerlach and to distribute it around town in thanks for hosting Burning Man. We're missing out if we're not taking advantage of it.

I can tell you that my wife and I both tried many times to get on in Gerlach. Couldn't even hack in. Ditto for the other guys from CO out there. I wonder if it is a seasonal thing? There were just a few wireless networks showing up in town... nothing anywhere near commercial. Nothing that we could find, anyway... Oh well.

I just read a thing in Wired magazine about it - maybe it is seasonal during Burning Man only? The article didn't say, but did say that Burning Man Inc paid to bring a very fat pipe into town and that during Burning Man they pipe it onto the playa. They did say that as a side benefit, Gerlach residents get free wireless and the way they said it in the article made it sound like it was full-time, not just during Burning Man.

That may be it (seasonal)... Gerlach is a really, really, really bizarre place. There are maybe 2 businesses that are walk-in types of places. One is "Bruno's Hotel and Country Club" and the other is "Bruno's Gas Station". The latter sells only gas and ice. The former is surely nothing that could be confused with a "Country Club". The signs on the bathroom doors say "NO BATHING". Hmmmnn...
We did have web service on the playa a year ago, one guy brought a dish. It is pretty desolate out there....
