Well, still no Sams Club construction going on, so we went out to the site this weekend and burned up the better part of an Estes flight pack. 15 launches with my son and his friend.
No wind and dry soft plowed dirt made for a good day. Only two failures resulting in lawn darts. Both Estes fault. One was a failed ejection charge (cap intact, MESS filed), and the other was (in my opinion) a poorly designed engine mount in the "Cosmic Cobra" helicopter recovery model. It's one of those with molded ribs in the fincan, but no tube or thrust ring. The motor pushed itself up through the front stops, up about 2 inches or so. The ejection charge either didn't fire or blew out the back since it was all open. Note off to Estes on that one. Hopefully a replacement will be made.
If you want to fly there, make sure I have sent a signed release form with your signature on it to Sun Construction. Use it while we can!
Note: no waivers/notifications in place. This is LPR/MPR <1lb currently.
Ken
Ken,
I'm interested in launching at the site you mention. Where can I get the release form? I'm always looking for a launch site in the Longmont area for Estes size rockets to get kids interested in the hobbby.
Thanks.
Bob
Bob,
Send me your email address and I'll send it to you. Then just fax it back and I'll send it on to the property owner.

Hey Ken
Thanks for checking up on the Sandstone Ranch site. It was good fun there last year at Mini-Mayhem. I'd be up for another group launch there this spring. I have a friend coming into town right after MHM, so I might be out there the following weekend...
Recov teams wear long pants! Lots of thistles...
Remember EVERYONE (including spectators and children) at this site during a launch must sign the waiver for the owners (only once). Respect.
For anyone using the field West of Sandstone, make sure you have a copy of your release with you at the site, in case someone questions your presence. No one has had any issue with us since we're far from all the ball games going on now.
One note... There is a LOT of trash blowing around the field due to the winds of late. Make yourself look good by picking up as much as you can while hunting for rockets. Always leave the field cleaner than you found it.
Thanks,
Ken
Hey Ken
How tall are the weeds? I might head there 5/10 for a Mini-Mayhem revisit...
Last year at Mini-Mayhem we had around 20 people and not only did we take all of our spent engines & ignitors, I also took home a half bag of trash that we cleaned up while looking for rockets. Getting the trash out of the way made it alot easier to find the rockets!
This is a great local site (except for the thistles..), so please be respectful! The housing crash may mean we have this site for much longer than we expected, as there are 120? houses to be built behind the proposed Sam's Club. So while the market crash may make it difficult to afford motors, at least we'll have a local launch site!
