I'm planning on launching ( http://rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?t=37255 ) this rocket at Oktoberfest. For the EMRR'07 challenge, it needs to fly 3 times on at least 2 different classes of motor. The initial flights will be G64 and G71R. The third flight was planned for F52, but the latest Rocksim projections suggest a total weight of about 40-44oz. I'll know for sure by next weekend.
So, I'm wondering about a H128W or H165R. I am not L1 certified, and I'm not sure I have the time, interest, or money to certify. I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to launch my rocket for me on Saturday if it survives the first two launches. I would pay for the motor and guarantee your casing against loss/damage. I'm open to other suggestions on the motor if needed to match your casing, so long as I can check in advance on stability.
Although I can't guarantee a safe flight, I can assure you that the rocket has been carefully designed in Rocksim, built to a very high level of craftsmanship, that this project is within my skills/experience level, and that I'll fly it first on Gs.
If this sort of arrangement is against club rules, I apologize and retract my question. Please contact me through this thread or via email geof@lamar.colostate.edu if you might be willing to help out.
My dad is flying out from California for the launch (I'm 41; he's 66). He and I have built the rocket working together since last January.
Geof
I'll volunteer to help and quite honestly, if it's built to take an H ride, why not go ahead and certify. I can help with that aspect as well. You'll need to be a NAR or TRA member to fly High Power but you can join either national org. on site if interested. One step at a time and I'm sure we can make it work out.
Geof,
That's an awesome looking rocket and a great build thread. I looks like several hours went into that one. I can't wait to see it in person.
I'll echo what Joe said.... go ahead and get the L1 with this bird - particulalry while your Dad is visiting.
I'll also echo in that that I will help in any way needed.
Good luck on the flight!
Thanks for the help and encouragement.
If I try to certify, do I need to join both NAR and NCR or just NAR?
Also, either way I would still need to borrow casing(s). For the rocket in question, it would be 29/180 or possibly 29/240. If I wanted to certify first in a "sure thing", one of those casings would fit in my Talon 2, or I could go with a 38/240 in my X-Calibur. Which of these would you have available as a loaner on Saturday?
Geof
Geof, You do not need to join NCR but eventually you will anyway. NAR or TRA membership is required for High Power and all of the motor cases you mentioned are available for your use. I still have a sweet Aerotech L1 motor and case combo waiting for someone like yourself and if I don't, Tim Thomas with Giant Leap almost certainly does. I'd do that if I were you.
Geof,
If Joe or Tim don't have a deal, I sure they will, I got a 29/180 or a 38/240 case you can use.
Ron
I've got cases you can borrow - anything 29 or 38 from AT that you might need.
Geof, what everyone said. This club starts throwing their equipment at you if you need anything. 😉 If there's anything I can do, just yell.
8) Most of the time we have 2 Level 1 offers. In 29mm there is a Aero H128 without hardware for !0.00 There are plenty of cases around that you can borrow. I have 2 or 3. The Pro 38 H153 motor and case for 20.00. I will have both at Oktoberfest. It would be cool to fly your EMRR bird for your Level1. Might be worth a few extra points. 8)
Plus, have a look at Tim's rocket kits. They're the best, as is everything he sells. After you and your dad see what goes on and goes up, at all cert levels, you will have a new appreciation of just how fun HPR can be. It'll be a blast! 😉
I've been to both MHM and OF before (as has my dad). What you guys do is really cool. Perhaps you've seen me there before...I'm usually the guy with the most outrageous boost glider and two kids with creative scratch builds.
Thanks to everyone for their offers. I'm still contemplating what to do, but have got "permission" from my wife to certify if that's the best option. I'll be in contact with some of you to line up motor casing(s) either way. The project is in its painting phase right now.
One other question about certifying. Suppose I attempt L1 on this highly uncertain Racer project and fail. I can still make another attempt on the same day with the same rocket, or with another rocket, right?
Geof
(hmm, that didn't work)
Geof, the kind of gliders... we're always glad to see you out at the field and we're always glad to help you out.
Warren
It took me two attempts for my Level 1.
No one had a problem with that.
All flights in Rocketry are learning experiences.
PS: I also admire Your flights. I have only seen them on DVD, but
they have a huge impact.
Your involvement with Your family is a welcome sight.
You would help Rocketry by advancing in the sport.
