A new NAR section, Peak City, in memory of William S. Roe, has been formed to be a consortium of NAR members from the various Sections in the region, for the sole purpose of producing a valid bid for a NARAM in Colorado. This way, no one section will be burdened by hosting the event. The first push is to try and make a bid for 2010 NARAM-52.
A website has been created for this purpose:
http://www.peakcity.org/
The membership in this 'umbrella' section is comprised of noteworthy Colorado NAR members (individuals and manufacturers) that have an interest in contesting and are willing to volunteer in some fashion for one of the many tasks set before us. If you have a can-do spirit, please contact me to be part of this effort. Note: Membership in Peak City is a co-membership with your current section.
my new email for this will be cd[at]peakcity.org
At present, the plan is to hold this in Pueblo at the Hudson Ranch. Local hotels have been contacted.
Our efforts seem to be very positive in being able to host NARAM-52 in Colorado, but the winning bid will be announced at NARAM-51. Keep an eye on http://www.peakcity.org for any breaking news.
One of the unique things we'll be planning is hosting a HPR contest on the Sport Range in parallel with NARAM, in the hopes that we get many HPR NAR and Tripoli flyers to compete down there for the week and join in on the banquet and other activities. We will also be handing out commemorative medals to all NAR or Tripoli flyers who launch their Certification Flights at NARAM.
This is a rare opportunity for you and your kids a chance to compete nationally, so while you are flying HPR, they can be competing at NARAM. You'll want to get them memberships in the NAR (HP flyers can have either membership) and make plans to attend four NAR regionals, either here in Colorado in one of the regionals we'll be planning, or the surrounding states to get the most points heading into NARAM. The leaders of NCR, CRASH, Triploli Colorado, FLARE, SCORE, COSROCS and UROC are all behind this effort.
In the mean time, here are the proposed NARAM events, followed by the HPR events to start you thinking on how to make winning rockets.
NARAM
B STREAMER DURATION WF-9
1/2A PARACHUTE DURATION WF-7
1/4A BOOST GLIDER DURATION WF-18
E DUAL EGG LOFT ALTITUDE WF-27
F SUPER ROC ALTITUDE WF-19
D HELICOPTER DURATION WF-23
A CLUSTER ALTITUDE WF-20
GIANT SPORT SCALE WF-20
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WF-36
The above have events that haven't been flown at a NARAM. The D helicopter, E eggloft, and F super roc will be challenging. Most all impulse ranges are represented (A cluster is the same as C).
For the HPR events we have proposed the following (two or more) and others:
(Download the NAR HP Sporting Code, as the events may all come from there) http://www.peakcity.org/docs/NAR_HPR_SportingCode_2009Edition.pdf
Precision Altitude, Set altitude - According to the NAR HP code para 21.2.2, altitude published prior to the event.
Pikes Peak or Bust, a modified Precision Altitude event. Using two flights of the same rocket and same class of HP motor (H and above), the contestant must try and get as close to the altitude of Pikes Peak 14,111ft/4,301M, without going beyond. Any one flight that is capable of reaching that altitude would violate the existing waiver so it must be accomplished in a minimum of two succesful launches with the sum of the altitudes, which includes the base altitude of 5477 Feet elevation as part of the equation. (ie, 5477ft + 4317ft + 4317ft = 14,110 feet). Busting 14,111 feet disqualifies the last flight. You can select any variation of motor withing the class you use to tune for the altitude as long as they are all H's, I's, J's, etc.
I in the Sky - 'I' Altitude, modified to stay within the 8000 ft waiver - The rocket must have a minimum of 12" long 4" diameter airframe as part of its construction, which will have sufficient drag to keep an altitude attempt below the waiver using an I motor of 320.01 to 640 Ns Impulse.
People's choice Upscale Competition, H-K motors. (This is a bit inconvienient to the competitor as they must set it aside for one day for judging which prevents them from prepping the rocket - process TBD). All registered flyers, whether NAR or Tripoli may vote (for reasons given above).
We are blasting ahead in the planning for NARAM-52. Current status may be found at http://www.peakcity.org
To all Tripoli and NAR HPR Flyers. We will be having a HPR contest on the sport range in parallel with NARAM-52 and anyone getting a L1, L2 or L3 flight certification flight that week will get a commemerative medal. Awards will be presented at the NARAM Banquet. Note: Our waiver is 8000' AGL. (For an L3, that's a small M in a 50+ lb rocket)
For all Colorado Rocketeers who are Parents. This is the first time in 10 years that a NARAM is in Colorado. Another 10 years may go by before we have another. This may be ONLY opportunity that your kids will be able to fly as a Junior at a NARAM without having to travel out-of-state. Even if you are a die-hard HPR only flyer, don't pass up this opportunity for your kids. Its a once-in-their-lifetime event for them. While they are on the NARAM contest range you can be competiting on the HP sport range. SWEEEEEET! You will need them to join the NAR as soon as possible so they can start building points in the regionals that we are planning. The total points from four regionals are carried into the National Championship. The regionals will be having many of the same events as NARAM-52 so by the time August rolls around, they'll have built all the rockets they will need.
B-Division R&D Cash Awards. Robert Alway has donated funds to the NAR to pay for cash prizes for B Division competitors at NARAM-52 who excel in Research and Development. B-Division are NAR members who were 14-18 years old at the beginning of the contest year, July 1, 2009. Members must attend NARAM-52 to present their reports. Robert Alway is a long-time model rocketeer, NAR member and former NAR trustee. The prizes are funded in memory of his parents, Clayton D. and Ida M. Alway. The first place prize is $1000. Second place is $600, third is $400, and fourth is $200. As many as ten $100 honorable mention prizes may be awarded to qualifying entries that the judges deem to be of excellent quality.
Congrats on the new section and landing NARAM-52..... I've been off the board for a bit and found out yesterday via James....
