Members and Friends,
There is a scheduled/approved Northern Colorado Rocketry launch event on Sat, 11/3 at the Atlas launch site.
With no fire restrictions currently in place in Weld County or on the Pawnee NG, the PNG Ranger has "green lighted" NCR for the event, subject to normal precautions.
We are GO for Launch. Clear to partly cloudy skies, with a slight chance of rain and temperatures reaching the low fifties are expected for launch conditions at the Atlas Site on Saturday, November 3rd. The current weather predictions appear favorable for flying rockets, opening the waiver and range at 9 AM and lasting until 3 PM or until we run out of motors, lose interest or the cold chases us away, whichever happens first. This launch opportunity will be for commercially approved motors only and all flights must remain under the 12,000’ AGL ceiling.
For those of you driving a long ways to visit our launch, I’d recommend checking in with your favorite weather report or call the Greeley-Weld County Airport’s automated weather line at 970-352-3511.
An orientation briefing for participants will be held and will include a discussion of safety and emergency procedures, fire conditions and instruction, applicable rules and regulations, and what is expected of participants with regards to the use of NFS lands under our special use permit.
Please note that all launch events will be conducted using nationally approved/accepted range safety practices. The launching of rockets on NFS land is normally prohibited under Forest Service regulations. The issuance of our permit allows launches to take place for approved launch events only.
As always, volunteers are needed to help with range set up, operation and clean up. Hope to see you out on the range.
Who's up for towing the trailer out and back?
I'm now equipped with a tow package w/ 2" ball on my pickup,, so would be glad to do it,,, but having never done it before, I'd need instructions on location, keys, passwords, secret handshakes, and the Captain Midnight decoder ring to pull off the stunt. If someone else can meet me out there and provide the requisite training, I'd be one additional resource for future engagements. Or just PM me with the "... for Dummies" version, I can probably figure it out.
PS - That would be for towing out... took a bit of a blow to the head a couple of weeks ago,,, messed up my hands a some too. Usually good in the morning, but turn wimpy as the day wears. May not make it to the end.
What, there is a secret decoder ring? I did not get one.
If you can drive to Pierce, go east on WCR 90, go to the corner of WCR 90 and WCR 41, use the secret handshake and password to find the trailer, hook up a trailer, then continue east, go further east past the stop sign where you intersect CO 14, go past WCR 71, (15 miles from where the trailer was found) turn north and go to, decode, (this is where I cut the wire because I did not have the ring) and go through the barb-wire gate that is just past 71, on the other side of the highway, then you can do it.
There are more details to the process than what I have written here, but I bet Joe or someone will fill in the rest. (It is not my place to tell you to do it.)
Hey guys new member here.
I'm president of the rocket club at Colorado School of Mines.
Me and a few guys from the club will be joining NCR for our first official launch. We have at least three high(ish) power rockets (from PML, Wildman, and Giant Leap), and one large one (4" fiberglass, may or may not be ready).
Given the bureaucracy of using school funds to buy rocket engines at a launch, I was wondering if I could get more information on how (and if) we can buy engines there. We have one 2-grain 38mm Cesaroni casing that we will need reloads for, and we may want to buy some casings (specifically 4 grain 38mm or 3 grain 54mm). Will vendors be there selling these? If so, is cash the only option? We will need official looking receipts to get refunded from the university and I need to know if these can be provided. I'm a bit worried because the few high power launches I've been to have been cash only, and a pretty causal buying process that wouldn't go over with school agencies. If we can't get the school to pay, I will probably just pay out of pocket.
Also, we should have at least three people going for their L1 cert (maybe L2 as well). We will bring the forms required, but is there anything else we should be aware of?
I'm also planning on bringing a three rail launch tower we built. (for ~2 inch diameter rockets)
Look forward to seeing you guys there!
-Ted
Hi guys, welcome. As you know, we will be launching from the Atlas site, east of Ault on Colo.14 this Saturday.
I am speaking as a club member, with know real responsibility or authority, so you know where I am coming from.
Joe, "El Presidente", should be out there and is the motor man for Giant Leap Rocketry. He should have what you want in the way of motors. Sometimes, if you want specific motors, you need to call or e-mail weeks in advance to make sure that he can get the motor you want if he does not alreday have it. I have never seen Joe not have the motor I want, but I am a L-2 and do not fly much above a 54mm, at this time. Joe can provide you with receipts on whatever form of payment is used, I am sure.
I think the ceiling for Ault is 12k, but I may be wrong, so that might limit what flights you are trying to do. Maybe someone else will jump in and be confirming or correcting my comments.
I do not believe you will have any real issues this Saturday, we will be glad to help in any way we can, and look forward to meeting you guys.

Thanks a bunch. I'm sure I will see you there.
Anyways, this is a huge pain, but this what the guy who I have to talk to said:
"We will need to know for sure if they can take a card. If they can do that and offer an itemized receipt we are likely ok. If not we will need to get them set up as a vendor so we can issue a check, and that requires a W-9 form on file with us so we can pay them. That takes more time and we may or may not be able to issue a check by Friday so that you could take it with you. Please call someone and let me know the outcome ASAP."
Go to www.giantleap.com. Look for motors. Joe is the motor guy. It will have his phone number and I think his e-mail address. Call him and ask what he will do. That is the most definitive answer I can give you. Joe can tell you a lot more. Just ask, and you shall receive.
A warm welcome to NCR. Bear is correct about the waiver for the Atlas site. It is 12,000 ft AGL. With the proximity of Hwy 14 we are limited to "K" impulse motors. If there are clouds we may be limited to that ceiling.
If you have never been to the Atlas site I suggest you wear good boots for rocketry recovery as there is a lot of cactus in some areas.
My name is Dennis Billings and I will have the membership forms with me at the launch. the ones on the website are not correct. The cost for new members is 25$ one time intiation fee plus 25$ yearly dues. So 50$ the first year and 25$ each year after. Look me up at the launch.
