Not quite rocketry, but my hunch is this will strike a chord with many folks visiting this forum. Very powerful.
Fantastic! Thank You.
Wow! Not sure how I missed this post but I did and I am glad I spotted it before it made it too far down the list.
Just awesome! I had the pleasure of taking off from Akron this last weekend behind two P51 Mustangs, I was honored to deal with their wake turbulence! Just awesome!

Thanks indeed. What a great story, what a great project! I've always had a dream of restoring and flying an F-4U Corsair. Unfortunately my career doesn't seem to be generating that kind of "extra" income. LOL

Hey ART
Isnt it neat how they could afford an 8000 foot runway out there, but no taxi ways. 🙂
Yep 🙂 Nice runway though!

Even if you were able to come up with the funds, good luck finding one. I cant remember but I think I heard somewhere that there are like a dozen or less left in the world.

Clone it!
But good luck finding an adequate substitute for the 1500hp Merlin!

Currently finding one would be tough. Last year there was a rotting hulk available for $200k and I can't begin to imagine the costs with the restoration of it. You are correct Art there are only 12 in flying condition that are known to exist. I did find one promising website that claimed they were working on an 82% scaled version of the F4U-1A built from the original plans with the intent to make a kit. They are still developing the prototype at this point however. I'll have to keep watching them to see what (or if) they succeed. Obviously no Merlin for the kit either.

I think you guys are thinking of the Mustang, the F4U has a Pratt & Whitney R-2800.

Whoops, wrong bird.
I remember seeing a documentary about 20 years ago about the end of WWII and they had a whole bunch of film of bulldozers pushing dozens and hundreds of P51's, B24's, B17's, P47's, etc. into huge piles in England and dousing them with gasoline and just burning 'em up.
I do remember back in the 60's when I was a kid there were several refurbed warbirds - a P-51 and a P-47 - located at a little strip near my home in central NJ. I always assumed there were a lot more of them left flying because at the end of WWII quite a few were sold off in demilitarized condition to private pilots.

It is a shame! That sort of thing still happens today. Though they are not being piled up and burned, mass amounts of F-117 Stealth Fighters are being chopped up and condensed. An F-117 pilot who goes by “Ghost” told this to me.

I vaguely remember seeing something on Discovery channel. The reason planes were scrapped at the end of the war.
The manufactures cut a deal with the government. To cut costs for production, they could purchase back the aluminum at a discount once the planes weren't needed. Eventually some were sold to private citizens for as little as $2,500.00. What a deal Huh!!
