Looking for some entertainment this weekend? And I thought our rocketry hobby was expensive - these guys fly planes worth more than my car. http://www.warbirdsovertherockies.com/
I have been to their RC flying shows before and they are quite impressive. I use to fly RC and it was a hoot, (I was dropping bombs, launching rockets off of rails on the bottoms of my wings, and building ducted fans, (before jets), but I think my hobby is still rockets. Their planes are absolutely fantastic, but there is not as much making it myself, unless I am scratch building, as their's is buying landing gear and props, and canopys, and pilots, etc. and then painting them up. We still have the challenge of getting them down in flying condition and trying to recover them. (I guess they do also). There is also the challenge of keeping them together on the way up. We can destroy them, and although it hurts when we do, we can also rebuild and normally be back in the air in a few weeks or months, (unless we speak of an S-5 destroyed with deployment failure); the failure with the RC may take years to replace, which I am no longer prepared to do. I do think everybody should get out to Drake Field and see their stuff, though, again it is quite impressive. 8)
I went to one a couple years ago at Drake Field. It was fantastic.
A big eye opener.
Grand Stands - Food - Port-a-Pots - Vendors. A
nice time.
Rockets are better though.
As an added attraction, they do have a Full Scale fly-by with a Mig 17, and a Thunderbird and a few others slated between noon and 12:30. Rumor has it, an A-10 Warthog is going to make an appearance. Airshow starts after the real planes buzz the field and there's pyro involved and then open flying during the rest of the afternoon. Pretty kool toys!
