ok everyone I know that Octoberfest is some time away yet.(and we just finished with MHM) BUT time does truely fly as ive come to find as I have gotten older. Anyhow I wanted to find out if anyone had any BIG or special or fun projects they were going to fly at Octoberfest. Maybe a Cert flight or special flight or something they just wanna share. I love hearing about the projects that all do and look foreward to your comments and the launch of those. So feel free to chime in and give us a lil taste of whats to come.
As for me I am in the current works for a L3 project that will be 6" Diameter all Glass construction and at about 14 ft tall with a motor mount capable to do 98mm at 48" long with all the cool stuff of course. The motor I belive to use will be the AMW M2500GG. its the 75-7600 case and its at 7800ns with a burn time of 3.1sec. Should be fun. Now let me hear what you all plan!!!!

Well, that is likely to be the next flight of my Black Brant X.
It will go up on another 54/1706 load like it did at Mayhem (not sure which one though - possibly a long burn, or maybe redline). If I can afford it, I may even upgrade to a 54/2560 load 😀
I've always loved the K700 8)
Will definitely be a big flight for me though, and it may well be that rocket's first flight over a mile, as it didn't quite reach the 1 mile barrier on the flight at Mayhem (5120' - so close). I know it's not a LIII, but it's the best I can do 😉
I really, really, want to finish Freeze Frame by October. The M1419 has been calling my name. Freeze Frame is still under construction as well as the web page but some photos can be found at http://www.rocketryphotography.com/rockets/RocketsFreezeframe.html
It is a 6" all fiberglass rocket with a 98 mm mount and two strap on boosters with 54 mm mounts. Its been under construction for what seems like forever so I do need to get it finished so I can move on. i just haven't decided if I'm going to Oktoberfest or Plaster Blaster being held at the same time. That will probably be determined at the last minute looking at the forecast.

I'd also like to do a camera project, but these big projects are wearing me out--both time and $$$$ wise.I want something i can just retrofit to "midlife crisis" (which hopefully will do its maiden flight at Hartsel 6/4).
Some time ago on one of the forums I saw a nifty high rez wireless video camera that is cylindrical and between 1.3 and 1.8 inch diameter that was selling out for round 100 bucks. Struck me as a perfect candidate for strap-on use--umm for rockets that is. Just an acrylic cap to protect from blast, and a dummy tube of same dims on the opposite side and you're good to go. Anyone seen anything like it?
Lipstick cameras John? I've seen 'em, have a source for them too but don't have it handy. I'll try to track it down and post it later today or this week. They're even smaller than you're talking about. Cylinder 5/8" diameter and about 2-3" long.

Wal-mart carries something like what you're talking about. I think they called it a "sports camera" for mounting on the side of your helmet. A guy flew it strapped on to a 2.6" G motor rocket and it lasted one flight. It stopped working on the second flight.

I'm talking about more professional grade stuff. The camera's I've seen run about $100 or a little bit more.

I'll also be working on another project this summer - no guarantees about it's readiness for oktoberfest.
Teaser specs:
2 motors
7 feet tall
20lbs 😆
Dave Way and I are working on a new 6in. X 10 ft. or so. It has 5 motors, 4X38mm with a center 54. Should have lots of fire and smoke. We are planning on keeping it to the heavy side, A slower flight, lots of show and go. Tim 8)
I am working on a 12.5" diameter Saturn V. I'd love to get it done by Oktoberfest, but there is a lot to get done.

Warren, yes thats a possibility, but there are some bigger bore hi-rez CCD lipstick like cams, but these are running 250 or more on the sites I've seen. Darn, should have seized the moment, not sure I want to invest that much. If anyone wants to go in halves, lets do it!

Hey John. Actually I to am looking in to onboard video as well. BUT i would rather it just do direct record on board myself then have it do wireless transmission to the ground. Is that the same as what you are looking to want to do? If so I would be interested. Wouldnt mind doin a lil video in my L3 project.
Conway
Con,
I'm completely open as to logging vs telemetry, esp if we could write to a compact media type. But I really want to do a tube camera as I am really really tired of sanding, filling, filing, shaping etc 👿
My L3 is a "modular" rocket consisting of 4 in one. 10' by 6"; 8' by 4" ; both by 12' single stage, and both by 14 ' two stage. A creative and fun project that has taught me scads about building big, but............
The amt of surface work/prep has been staggering! I'm fried. At this stage I just want to bolt a pair of strap-on's on, put the camera in one, a dummy load in the other and be good to go. Besides these strap-ons have a dual use, Skids!
J
PS: Next rocket or several are gonna be kits, pref the FG type. 😉
As I am a bit of a Comp geek owning my own PC bussiness here and wanting to do some of this type of direct filimg and loading editing and burning to media is what really interest me as well as I just love the look of video of a onboard flight. Now when you are say tube camera tell me more as to what you are looking for. As I am looking for something rather compact. i dont care if it writes to tape or flash memory or what. I am open to suggestions as this would be my first try at any of this such work. (to much past just dedicated at building fast high alt rockets i guess no room) But beings that now my train of thought is more along the lines of BDR stuff and lots of motor and/or motors. Room will be a thing i have. As for i understand on the projects they wear on. the rocket i have that I am doing for my L3 is an all glass contruction 6" Diameter done in zipperless fashion. My booster being capable of 98mm motor and long enough(48"+) to handle the N4000 BB motor from AMW. moving to a lower body section for the apogee event (36"+ long) connected together to the upper airframe (48" Long) and the blowing the nose cone off for the mains.(total of about 14ft tall) Something simple. pretty muchly the way i build everything I have done guess it just works. But my ebay is plenty large. and I am only running 2 RRC2X alt in it for deployment. something simple. But i would love to catch the M2500GG flight for the cert on film. I am willing as that this part about the camera being not so knowledgeble to really take some suggestions on what to get what to look for ect....Gotta learn somewhere i guess. But thats the whole reason I am a BAR-BAR..... (2nd time around being a BAR thingy...lol) Plus I also plan to get back into doing EX as well and plans for some VERY large motors. Would love to be able to get some good film on that to. Anyhow John I will take any info as like I say I am learning about this aspect of onboard video.
Thanks
Conway
Con,
Funny, I'm a bar-bar myself, or a re-BAR first as estes in youth, then during grad school, estes in conection with volunteer work at a Boys/Girls club which led to lots of comp. experience and my first view of HPR, then most recently as HPR addict. When I say tube cam--just that. Cylindrical profile with leads out the ass. No mirrors. No funny looking moldings, just a straight shot down the side.
