In fact the actual construction of plywood is nothing more then bonded together wood going opposite grains from one another. So that shows that bonding does work fine.
I sanded with 220 or something like that and used 30 minute epoxy to laminate the fins (hobby town brand). I pressed the two pieces together between two large pieces of particle board using a 45lb weight and a couple of full paint cans to compress the plywood. It seemed to squeeze most of the epoxy out. On the retainer, I'm using a Public Missiles retainer. The type with three allen screws to screw into threaded inserts in the aft centering ring.
Thanks guys!
Give me and email addr. and I'll send you a photo. Or both of you can send me an email at ken_plattner@yahoo.com and I'll reply with a photo.
The PML retainer will work just fine. You may have to notch your thrust ring portion of the adaptor to clear the screws. (ive used one of these in my 4" PML Endeavour worked fine. also had the same basic idea you have for the adaptor that I used.) Sound like the fins should be allright. Its fine if it squeses the epoxy out. It will fill voids as wellas soak in. It only takes a light surface coating to do the job. Infact if you have a spare piece of Ply wood try taking the levels apart and see how thin the adheasive is in plywood. Its like barly anything. It will hold just fine.
Already notched the ring on the adapter. You guys are way ahead of me. Next bird will be built with G10 fins I think and maybe even a layer of glass around the tube if I can learn how to do it. On this one I was only trying to keep the weight down. And even now it comes in between 110 and 115 oz fully loaded.
Thanks again...
Ken.
Thats actually pretty light. only 7 lbs. My L3 is weighing in at 55lbs. Doing the glass is easy. I have some great tips for you there. I love playing with composites and laminating and just doing all around stuff with Fiberglass and Carborn fiber. fun stuff. BUT now their is an easier way to hlass a project. Check out this web site.. I have used their stuff and its awesome easy to use no seams. I just apply it and then the epoxy. Then I wrap it in a clear Mylar wrap then wrap it with Duct tape going down the BT spirally squezing the excess expoxy out. Let it cure and its pretty well done.
here is the place........... http://www.aerosleeves.com/category_s/23.htm
Ken, are you going for L2 with the L2 rocket you showed me at the next launch (if the September launch happens), or Oktoberfest? If so, I'll co-certify you with someone else, maybe Joe H. if he's avaiable. Joe will have to give you the test, if you haven't taken it already.
I was planning on it. I'd like to do it at the Sept. club launch - not as much activity going on. I'd be obliged if can certify for me. I still need to take the test though.
Ken.
You can take the test at the launch, but contact Joe Hinton first, so he has a heads up.
Ken,
I would be more than happy to sign off with Bruce for your level 2. let us know where and when. 8)
Thanks, Tim. I'll need a J90W for that. Hopefully there will be a launch in October. It's you and Bruce...
