Building a sugar motor looks to be pretty fun.
I do not think they can be used at a NAR launch.
Would it have to be a Tripoli Research Day Launch?
Sugar motors can be flown at research days. The *only* motors that can be flown on NAR days are commercially certified motors.

Most definitely. Sugar and Sorbitol motors, Ammonium Nitrate motors, and homemade Nitrous Oxide hybrids are all definitely within Tripoli rules. Large black powder motors, LOX Hybrids and liquid-fueled motors are a bit touchier subject according to the research safety code and things I've seen posted on the Tripoli list server by members of the BOD.

Mike, I have a lot of info on "sugar" reloads. PM me with your e-mail address, and I'll pass on docs and links to you. They're fine for up to J's, though some people have made them through M's. Not as hard as you might thinks, just ground test them in a stand before you out one in a rocket. Here's a good link to get you started: http://www.rocketmotorparts.com/
