Will there be a launch tower available for Saturday, August 1st? I have a 3" bird (8.5 tall) I'd love to fly. I haven't invested in my own tower yet and would appreciate access for a launch.
Thanks,
Scott Martin
Scott,
What motor are you flying?
The reason I ask is that we have a couple of towers that would work - but neither are in the trailer right now. We can arrange to get one to the launch for you as needed.
Ed
CTI IMAX L585. ?Why does the motor size matter for the tower? Thanks Ed.
Scott
Scott,
The club has three towers. The largest one is the one you can see in the photo currently on the main page of the website. It is very stout and works well for three inch, big motor, birds. It is 10 feet long. Unfortunately it is heavy and large and does not fit in the trailer so we don't always bring it.
The second largest tower is about 5'6" tall and is framed by two 26" bicycle rims. Its pretty good for the 54mm K range.
The third tower, which is usually brought to all launches, is about 4 feet long. We commonly call this the “bicycle tower” as it is also framed by kid-sized bicycle rims. Someone pulled this tower from the trailer a couple of launches ago and has not replaced it. I need to find who has this one and get it back in the trailer.
So, my guess is that you will want the largest of the towers for your 3" L585.
Ed
I missed the fact that you said your rocket is 8'6" in your first post. Had I paid attention, that would have answered my question.....
I have the small bicycle tower and will be bringing it this weekend.
The big tower, on the front page of the website is really only good for 3" and up. It just doesn't adjust down well for 54mm. It also does not travel well - when it gets tossed on top of the trailer, it gets to flopping around and it loosens up even more.
As a club, we need to address something a bit more bulletproot going forward. The towers we have all have some disadvantages. Towers are also a LOT more in demand than they used to be. I like Adrian's concept, and his tower dismantles into something that is pretty portable - but 3" is about the maximum that can be flown out of that tower, depending on fin size.
I'm planning to be there with my 8' tower that has been used at NCR since MHM. If my plans change then perhaps someone can pick it up down here. It disassembles nicely so it actually fits in most cars (as long as the poles go into the passenger footwell area.
If I remember correctly, it can accommodate up to 10" total fin circle diameter.
Adrain,
Can we plan on using your tower for Scott's flight?
I might be easier to transport and setup than the club's large tower.
Ed
Just a note: I will be setting up the 'Red Pad' with at least
an 8' for 1515 rail buttons.
Everything is coming together for me to be there on Saturday, so yes, you can plan on my tower being there.
I'd donate the tower to the club except that sometimes I want it at TC Hartsel launches too. I'll try to leave it with other folks if I know I won't be flying.
Hmm, I just check my RockSim file and I have a Span Diameter of 11.9 inches. It sounds like Adrian's tower won't work for me.
Ed, Can I assist in hauling something for the large 3" tower? What dimensions of LxWxH are needed?

I'll double-check the size when I get home.

Guys, I don't think the tower at Ed's house (the one on the front page here) will handle an 11.9" span, either - see the ring at the top in the photo. I think if you measure it, the I.D. of the ring is less than 11.9", especially when accounting for fittings, etc. that can be obstructions if the rocket rotates.
Scott, are you able to install lugs?
Shoot, I didn't realize I had build such a large bird for our standard towers. My mistake. Unfortunately, I don't have any lugs on hand to install for Saturday. I may need to rethink things a bit here.
Not knowing the clubs tower design, can the top ring in the tower be easily replaced with a larger ring? I wonder what else would need to be scaled.
Scott
The large tower has an internal diameter of 16.5" at the upper ring, so you should be OK.
Now, we just need to get someone who can take the tower up from Longmont as I will not be flying this weekend.
I'll make a separate post for trailer towing and tower hauling.
