Hey everyone,
I've been working on my little dawg dual delpoy rocket, that i picked up from Jon. I would like to cut 5 inches off the sustainer tube. So my question is, what do people use to cut fiberglass with? Can i use a radial arm saw (chop saw) ? just go slow? THought about wet tile saw, not sure though.
How do you like to cut Fiberglass?
Thanks
I asked some of the gurus here the same question a bit back.
I can't pull up the emails right now, I'm on the wrong side of Bootcamp.... But, I remember these.
Band saw - I use a metal cutting blade and it works great.
Tile saw w/ diamond blade - works for CF and FG. Also good for slotting - haven't tried it but I think Wilke told me about it.
Plywood blade in a chop saw - tape the area to minimize splintering. I've used this too. I also use this one for cutting my motor grain casting tubes.
A masonry blade is best. They basically look like a giant Dremel disk - they are reddish-brown in color. Wear a mask, you don't need to be sucking that glass dust 😯
I bought a blade recently. IIRC it was 12" diameter and it was something like $8. This is what the manufacturer uses to cut the stuff, and they get about 1,000 cuts per blade. It works quite well.
I can vouch for a tile saw. The diamond blade works wet or dry on FG, CF, circuit boards, even plywood in a pinch. Mine is a cheap 4" or 5" tile saw I got for cutting tiles (of all things!) from home depot a few years ago.
I use a masonry cut-off wheel in my chop saw to cut tubing to length or I swap the cut-off wheel into my table saw to cut slots for fins. Wear a respirator and gloves or you'll regret it.

Hey, JW, you said you don't have any tools? What's up with this? 🙄
Good catch Bruce! JW has at least three tools but small ones - a phillips head screw driver, a flathead screw driver and a hammer. And now maybe he's got a chopsaw.
