I don't like friction fitting motors, so I always use motor retainers. I recently bought a Semroc Arcas and love the kit but it assumes friction fit. It has a balsa tailcone around the motor mount.
Here's the Semroc rendering of their kit:
Using a metal hook requires cutting a channel in the tailcone but this is definitely the easiest solution. I thought a 29mm slimline would be nice but then remembered that the thrust ring on the motor casing fits inside the retainer which makes it really big and then forces me to have to cut a lot off the tailcone.
Are there other options? For example, I was hoping to find a tailcone to buy to replace the balsa one. The aeropack and slimlines only go down to 38mm but I need 29mm. Anyone know of other places or a solution that I haven't thought of?
Sink a threaded standoff (with epoxy) into the tailcone, adjacent to the motor tube. Then just use a screw & washer to retain. When it's not on, no ugliness to take away from a nice rocket, just one small hole (or two, if you're paranoid). A 6-32 screw with a large flat head would probably hold it fine.

I've got some 29mm slimlines. They are 1 3/8" diameter and 1.125" long. Don't know if it would work.

Man, I gotta get back there soon..... The paint booth is going to be full isn't it? 😛 How many birds are do you think you will have ready?
BTW, I have some 2mm and 3mm stuff as well as some 4-32 (I think) all-thread at the house.
I'm planning on being home Wed night, give me a call then.
