ALPHABET CONTEST UPDATE
Registration is closed. Fifteen flyers are in the soup, flying for bragging rights and a prize pot of three hundred dollars. Current standings are gleaned from NCR flight cards and the rusty cobwebs in my mind. If I am in error with the results so far, prove it to me otherwise. The contestants are listed in Alphabetical order and the list has no bearing on the respective order of their successful sojourn so far.
1. Bill Beggs
2. Dennis Billings
3. Grant Dreasher
4. Ron Dreasher
5. Scott Evans
6. Chris Frazier
7. Steve Frazier
8. Joe Hinton
9. Art Hoag
10. Rick McDonald
11. Chad Moore
12. Ken Reilly
13. Jon Skuba
14. Mark Stumbaugh
15. John Wilke
Bill Beggs started his run thru the challenge at Mile High Mayhem. Two DQ’s (first run to D, second run to I) and a third start up thru the Alphabet left Bill completing the first five letters- A to E.
Dennis Billings had a rough start in February and again in March but put together an impressive string of flights at Mayhem to complete the first ten letters - A to J.
Grant Dreasher also started the challenge at Mile High Mayhem and successfully completed the first three letters – A to C.
Ron Dreasher started in March and started over at Mayhem, taking it one step further and completed the first six letters – A to F.
Scott Evans had his share of little problems but nailed his L3 at Mayhem. With his thrid start up the alphabet, Scott got thru the first five letters – A to E.
Chris Frazier started in February and re-started in February, and has completed the first three letters – A to C.
Steve Frazier also started in February but hasn’t pushed beyond his first letter – A.
Joe Hinton hasn’t given up but DQ’d with his F flight at Mayhem and needs to start over.
Art Hoag is smarter than a fifth grader but hasn’t started his Alpha assault.
Rick McDonald paid to play but hasn’t started yet either. Rick did indicate that he might not win the prize pot but should win STYLE points as every flight for his Alphabet challenge would be made with the same STYLE rocket – an Honest John.
Chad Moore has focused more on altitude records than running the alphabet but sits comfortably with A down and the rest to follow.
Ken Reilly made a most impressive run, starting with A at Mayhem but unfortunately disintegrated on his L attempt. Don’t count Ken out yet.
Jon Skuba took an early lead in the contest, successfully flying through the first eight letters and adding the ninth letter - I - at Mayhem.
Mark Stumbaugh started in February, started over in March and added to his progress at Mayhem, reaching for and setting himself up for a showdown spelling bee with successfully negotiating the first ten letters –J.
And John Wilke, after two rough starts and then by using some borrowed rockets and one of his own, has managed to sneak up to a tie for the lead, completing the first ten letters – A to J.
Go figure. Fifteen talented flyers with limited launch opportunities and weather worries. Now it gets interesting.
Actually, the K attempt was beautiful. It was the L that burned up.Reatsrting is not such a hard decision when you've only burned a-D or E. After burning a K and an L already, I'm not sure starting over would be all that worthwhile. Then again, there's quire a bit of year left...
PS Look for my L3 on 7/11.
This will be interesting... It would be very hard for me to start over if I biff it now.
My "L" shot will be the toughest, as I will be attempting it in a rocket that clearly wasn't meant for an L. That is if I don't take a digger on my K boost 😯
I smiled when I realized the 13th letter of the alphabet was "M"....
Umm
Actually this is my third time up!
Who would of known, you would have to apply all the science and technolagy learned by NASA in the last 60 years for a "D" and "E" shot. 😯
Corrections made. Apologies to Scott, Ken and Mark. I just hope someone wins this outright so I don't have to calculate the N-sec. used to get there in a tie breaker. Could be too much for my bean counter and #2 pencil.
