In the NAR rulebook, there is thing called flying by proxy, and I took advantage of that rule by arranging with the contest chairman of the Dallas Area Rocket Society (Section 308), John S. Powley, to fly some rockets for me at their regional on June 21-22. Another of their members, John Dyer, agreed to fly half of the rockets for me, as well.
I sent them a D boost glider, B Helicopter, B streamer Duration, Set Duration, and a Sport Scale model of a Patriot (with supporting documents). The scale event was new to me, I had never entered one of those events before. I modified an Estes Patriot missile but made it look like the one in the White Sands Museum. All were sent by USPS ground with the motors loaded, to make it easier for them to launch, so the box was marked "Toy Propellant Device" on the outside. It got there in 4 days. Because the glider was wide and the helicopter long, the box was bigger than standard so I had to pay $19 for postage. I had to get these out in advance before heading down to Alamogordo the week before the DARS event. It was a busy rocket building time.
DARS delt with some winds on the 1st day which kept them from flying (sound familiar all you Pawnee flyers?), so there was a flurry of activity on Sunday. I had one disqualified event (my set duration separated and thermaled away) but the rest had decent flights, with no losses or casualties.
I ended up with 3rd overall in the C division and garnered 812 points. John Dyer, one of the team helping me, got 2nd. (hmmm... a conflict of interest? Throw a couple of peebles in the rocket...?) 😉
With gas prices the way they are, this was a cheap way for me to attend a regional and get the extra points before NARAM.
