See how this grabs you:
a.) Interested flyers at MHM submit a sealed envelope containing $10 and a guesstimate of how high they will fly a particular rocket/motor combo. The LCO desk holds the envelopes.
b.) After executing their flight, the flyer has a witness verify their altitude. Achieved altitude is recorded on the outside of their envelope, which remains sealed.
c.) At the close of operations on Sunday, the envelopes are opened and whoever gets closest to their projected flight's altitude (on a percentage basis) wins the kitty.
FINE PRINT: To be eligible, you must fly at least an F motor and you must achieve at least 1,000' in altitude (no taping your rocket to the rail and estimating an altitude of zero :-)) Winner takes all. Your actual mileage may vary.
The bigger the pot got, the more folks would jump in. I'd say multiple entries should be allowed. This way, no one would have to build a special rocket or buy a special motor. Level 0 flyers could compete with the most seasoned veteran.
Who is in?
Now this sounds interesting...
I might go for it...
Heck yeah, I think I'll enter on every flight! Seriously, it would be worth it to enter $10 to bet on the accuracy of my Rocksim abilities. 😀 ha!
JW,
I think I'd as soon go to a Cheetah girls concert. Its not w/o engineering challenge: but the idea of trusting an altimeter to be more accurate than the repeatibility of a particular rocket, I don't buy into. To be really competitive in such an event, you build a brick that goes 1445 feet every time on a G and doesn't like to weathercock. My daughter has just such a rocket, 4" 29mm powered. What I think is potenitally more interesting, and I can see all the laptops smoking away, is an event where everyone knows the altitude is gonna be say between 2000 and 4000'. Then they have to declare the launch vehicle and it gets a sticker. Then Warren draws from a hat the actual altitude goal. You have some time to add weight or drag, then fly it.

If we do this contest, I'll enter SkyScraper, and 18,000'.
Regarding altimeter repeatability... I recently threw all of mine in a chamber. I had 4 PerfectFlites and 2 MW. I was stunned at how close they all came out. I expected a great deal more variation.
JW
JW,
Let me know if you like to play darts sometime for $$. I get to be 5 feet away while you're in the back ot he bar getting rebounds off sots on their way to the head. 😛

This could be a very good contest to run. I'm interested. Let's see what kind of interest we have and we'll run it as a contest at MHM or Oktoberfest. Call it "1 card Rocket Stud" or something.
