So, Warren - how many SSS and SSSS do we have? What is in the kitty?
You in yet JW? Cuz I'm starting to feel pretty confident about my design. You perennial all-stars may be in for a shock. 🙄
OK, that was totally a joke, but I hope we do get some new blood into these contests. I can tell you firsthand that going up against the caliber of people in our club it can be a bit intimidating.
Oh, and xman, thanks for the tip. I actually have quite a bit of stuff from aerosleeves, which I love, but I hadn't seen carbon cloth on their site. That's what I need for the fins. I just saw what you were refering too and it looks perfect. Time to place an order I think.
Could I get some clarification on the rules for SSSS. The site states
- Highest altitude on a J350 motor.
- One shot, one try.
- Electronic tracking allowed.
What is the entry fee?
What is the prize?
When does it run? (All year?, once per launch?)
Thanks, Doug
$20 entry fee
Winner gets the whole pot.
You can enter until the first shot goes up.
Ends at the end of the year, prize will be awarded to me at the annual meeting 😉
OK, maybe the last part isn't true, but you get the idea. 😀
You can enter until the first shot goes up.
Ends at the end of the year, prize will be awarded... at the annual meeting
That eliminates me from competing...
Doug
Hey, Doug - no need to come to the meeting, we'll mail you a check!
The rules are essentially one shot on a J350, highest boost gets the loot. Very similar to the SSS except different motor and no tracking is allowed...
We need to get Warren to post the rules on both. We had a really nice set of rules drawn out but they were lost when the old server died. I'm sure I have them on my other computer...
Warren, do you have the rules handy?
Here's an idea on attaching the fins. I've never tried this but it may work OK, but I'll leave the analysis to the experts. Rather than mounting the fins directly to the airframe using a conventional surface mount, how 'bout a modified TTW approach. Since this is a minimum diameter rocket, you could only go TTW, the thickness of the wall. Not only would the fillets add strength (esp. if using glass or CF), but so would the area of contact between the fin and tube along the entire inside perimter of the slot.
Just a thought...
This is actually precisely how I do mine. I have done simple surface mounts, but most of the time I do as you suggest above. I go one tiny step further -- I wrap a motor in Mylar, slide that into the airframe, and tack things down thattaway. I slide the motor out , and the inside is clean as a whistle.... the Mylar works very, very well.
Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to imply that you had to be present to win, that's just when Warren announces contest winners.
On the fin mount, I was thinking about that too, but I wasn't sure if it was overkill. It seems like with a couple layers of tip2tip the root attatchment won't be the weakest link anyway. I'm more concerned about flutter. If the flutter can be mitigated, I wouldn't expect the root joint to be in any danger.
There is the basic rules posted under contests but not the details. I guess I could compete but there is a big difference if you local guys could pick and choose any month for the perfect conditions to fly in but I'm limited to May or Oktober (assuming I can even make it to either). Its too bad, I had a beauty for a design. Now, if you limited the flying to only Mile High Mayhem and/or Oktoberfest, the out of towners could have a chance...
Doug
Honestly, you probably have as good a chance that day as any. All of us who go there every month manage to procrastinate and all fly in November anyways, so it's not like we pick and choose the month 😆

I plan to fly SSS in May, in large part because there will be a greater chance of recovery -- more folks out wandering around, helping find the rocket, etc. Last year, the winning flights were flown in October for SSSS and November for SSS. The November conditions were hardly favorable. Two years ago, Ed won the SSS on a frigid December day.
To many, part of the allure and part of the game is seeing who-does-what-when. That said, May and October are really pretty good months to let 'er rip.

Warren, those are last year's rules... substantially the same, though we need to change dates and motor, as we are using the Road Runner G80 this year.... We also need to get the SSSS up. I know you are busy, and I don't want to sound like I'm nitpicking, but we may have a lot of outsiders and newbies this year........
I really hate to be crimped by the use of one motor as I expressed at the mtg, staging rules, and those too afraid of the variables need to be induced to try it. But here we go again. I suggest an elite SSSS buy in of 250 dollars that has no bearing on the overall SSSS payout, a side bet for those like Warren with confidence in their designs. Now heres the kicker--same altimeter, same day, no dance, just one hand of five stud. Draw straws for order of launch. We have two or more Mawds or whatever is agreed upon.

I might play in something like that. A situation like that has some nuances of its own, though. Suppose I go first and my chute is somewhat tangled up and the altimeter lands really hard. Not at all fair to the next guy. Or what if there are five guys in the game, and the third guy loses the altimeter?
Any set of rules will have some ups and downs, no pun intended. I personally like everyone using the same motor.
As far as getting several guys to flyin the same day... to date, we haven't been able to get five guys to fly in the same *season* 🙂
