We announced 3 new contests at the annual meeting, and will be carrying over the Upscale Contest from 2011. Full details shortly.
1) UPSCALE- to be judged and flown at Octoberfest. First, second, and third place chosen on build quality, accuracy, degree of difficulty, and flight performance.
2) FAT G- Who can fly the highest on a G motor, but rocket must be at least 2.5" wide for 24" of its length. Mirrors Tripoli "handicapped" rocket category. Continues throughout the year.
3) ALPHABET BRIBE- The Alphabet Clone returns, but if you DQ a rocket, you must pay a bribe to continue upwards. Continues throughout the year.
4) ALTITUDE POKER- Pay yer 5 bucks, draw a card, and launch a rocket. The altitude recorded by your altimeter becomes your other four cards. Best hand for the day wins. Will be held on various launch days TBD.
Chad Moore- NCR Contest Director
Chad,
Relatively new at this, but thought I might use the Fat G contest as an excuse to design, build, and fly my first scratch-build. Nice set of constraints to build around. Don't expect to be competitive (I typically over-build),, but will cobb something together and put down my money for someone else to take...
Just a question on 'standard altimeter'... I've got one of those toy altimeters in my toolbox (Jolly Logic) - I don't trust it but it's fun to play around with. Would that be OK for this contest,,, or should I invest in a real altimeter (I'm salivating over one of those Raven doo-hickies..)?
An AltimeterOne will work fine. Good luck on your first scratch build. With such a fat tube, you will be well below mach with a G motor, so you don't have to get too fancy with fins and airframe design (but yes, you do want to use through-the-wall fins).
What about an altimeter like the TeleMetrum? It can provide both a baro altitude and a GPS altitude (it might be able to provide an accelerometer based altitude also, but that should never be used for this purpose). Can we use that altimeter? If so, which altitude should be used for the contest?
One other question. Have the events for the Pawnee Open been chosen yet?
Won't speak up for certain about the altimeter readings from the TeleMetrum but I'd guess best hand presented would be your entry for the Poker game and official events for the Pawnee Open should be announced soon. Pretty sure they will include some of the NARAM 54 planned events. Probably a similar line up to the events planned for the BMMRC planned by CRASH for March 17th and 18th or the SCORE Regional planned for April 21st.
