It's probably too late to modify this year's alphabet contest, but as a variation for next year, we should have the first tie-breaker go to whoever does their set with the least number of rockets.
Or maybe just make the contest to see who can fly the most motor classes in the same rocket, without making any modifications between flights. The rocket would be weighed before the smallest and largest flights to make sure. Your choice of motor ranges. A through F? F through M? 5 classes would be a challenge. I'm pretty sure 6 is doable. Anybody up to try for 7? What range would you choose?
Yes, the rules have been posted - thanks Adrian. Good suggestions and worth considering for next year, depending on how well this trial event goes. That's not to say you can't try and do it on your own. Some challenges are supposed to be fun. I know of at least three flyers that are supposedely starting the climb through the Alphabet Saturday morning from base camp Atlas. I'd probably go with C to H or I.
OK, maybe I'm a ditz but I didn't see the alphabet contest rules anywhere... (I looked under "Contests" on the left side of this page).
I did have a question on this, though - can a contestant borrow rockets from another flyer, or do they need to build their own? I don't have any A-F stuff so I was going to grovel for rockets and buy motors to get at least that far. I'm good from there 🙂
BTW, I have never ever flown an E motor. D's when I was a kid, and a few F's since I got into HPR...
Rules were posted in the News Archives regarding the introduction of the contest and I think I might have included them again in the update News Article. Find them in the link to NEWS on the front page banner, or in the NEWS ARCHIVE link on the left column, or scroll down the front until the article appears. Lots of our Web pages need updates - it will be happening soon.
I have some rockets you can use - or I should say my boys do. But I get to use them first 🙂

This alphabet thing could get interesting... While this is not the official recap, I *think* I'm in the lead, having completed an L flight. I know Mark S. and Dennis B. are going to try to fly K, L, and M (both on L3 cert attempts). I'm also aware Ron D. isn't too far behind.
I'll have a decision to make, as I hope to fly my rocket "Rough Draft" on an M first thing Friday, weather permitting. Do I declare it an alphabet shot and risk it? or do I NOT declare it, possibly making the others push me into flying a 2nd M?
This will quite possibly be the last launch that anyone can fly an M due to the fact that November is way dicey and the Atlas site won't support an M boost due to dimensions. Great contest. We could end up with a couple of guys stumbling and someone winning with a K...
I'm still lurking in the back of the pack, and the real dark horse, Art, has yet to even start his schooling.
Knowing Art, he'll probably fly A through N this weekend in about 2 hours start to finish....

PS, schooling started and well on it's way! 😉

Oh, you just wait 😀
Winning Moter "O" "P" or "Q" 😯
This could get expensive. 😯
Could come down to Bank Roll. 😉

I'm thinking that I'll go to N.
If someone wants to fly an O (Art?), they're welcome to - that's getting a bit too expensive for me.
No, you just wait 😉 I will be at M by the end of Mayhem.
And if I have any problems on the next two flights I have a new set of motors ready to go again just in case 😉 Even if I were to crash I can be back at L again in one day, how is that for tricky! I think I will just enjoy watching this all unfold!

Heh.
You can race ahead - I'm thinking K by the end of Mayhem (unless we have bad weather on one or two of the days). I'll cover L and M over the summer, and N at Oktoberfest, assuming all goes well. I'll breathe a lot easier once I'm past J - that's where I'll start using electronics, and I have a much more consistent record with larger, more complex flights.
From now on (I onwards), I'll be using motors at the upper end of each impulse class though. Probably nothing <90%.

I think we should have a rule, " All Rockets should be painted ! "
ie. "Der Red Max" SHOULD BE RED !! 😉 I didnt see you calling it Naked Max. 😯
