The contest area doesn't show any results for SSS flights thus far. Has anyone made an attempt? I'm assuming if only one guy enters, he wins, but he gets... errr... his own money back?
Was just playing in Rocsim with the G80, min-diameter booster with min diameter boosted dart (Pico dual-deploy altimeter fits in a BT-5), although the odds of untracked recovery of a mosquito from 11k is unlikely! 😉
Am I right that there are no requirements that the entire rocket flies to that altitude? The booster should be recoverable. It's finding some sort of tracking smoke or screamer alarm that will fit in small tubing.
Just some fun ideas to toss around after all the big stuff has flown at Oktoberfest.

OK, looked at the rules again. Scratch the annoying sonic beeper idea. How about a small tracking smoke charge to burn on the way down?

Ken,
The only one I am aware of is Bob Messner's shot to just under 5K. I think it's in the launch logs for Friday of Octoberfest. I don't know how many entries there are. Perhaps Warren can reply when he gets back from the X-prize weekend.
I think I'm the only SSSC entry so far with a shot to 11,784. Should be room to beat that in November / December.
Warren,
Interesting point Ken brings up. Are boosted darts OK for the SSC or SSSC?
There has been 1 attempt, but there is a bug in the contest code on the site that I haven't gotten around to resolving yet. There has also been 1 flight on the Super SSS with the J350. Expect several SSS flights at the November 4th launch.
Warren
Warren, how much is in the respective SSS and SSSS kitties?
I would guess that darts are OK? I don't think the rules preclude them....
Tripoli rules preclude darts for single motor altitude events. There is a special category for darts so I would say they are out for the SSS and SSSS. That's my judgement and I would expect if you think about it that it should be true for what are essentially single motor altitude birds.
Current kitties are:
SSS = $200
SSSS - $120
Will there definitely be a tower at the November launch?
I will be making my SSS attempt there, and will need one...
Yes... whether it is Bob Messner's nice tower is unknown. The club does have a tower suitable though.
Warren
As long as I have at least 3 inches of guidance straight up, I'll be fine 😆
Tripoli rules preclude darts for single motor altitude events.
My comment was more along the lines of the SSS rules, which don't specifically preclude darts (IIRC). You are correct, TRA rules do rule out darts... But I don't know that we had any such restriction on the SSS or SSSS? I'd say go for it, but that is me. It will be very hard to do a G dart, anyway. Even a J350 dart would be dicey...
all the more challenge......
