Thought I'd give a thumbs up to the TeleGPS from Altus Metrum. It is small and will fit in my 29mm rockets rather easily.
I stuffed it into the NC of my new rocket, which is 38mm min-diameter and not dog collar friendly, this weekend and found it 0.9 miles away only using my Yaesu hand held radio. It was right where it said it was.
The APRS packets were easily received via the hand held. I didn't need my lap top or other appurtenant instrumentation. It may not be as cool as the complete Telemetrum, but for anyone wanting a cost effective GPS unit this looks like a real winner. The size also beats a dog collar hands down.
I can now stuff the TeleGPS unit into my 29mm minimum diameter Black Hawk and fly it on those 6xgl motors. (I lost my first Black Hawk with a 5 grain motor...) I plan on doing this next launch. I'll post how it goes!
I was able to easily put the TeleGPS in my eBay of my Blackhawk. I flew it on a 6 grain smokey Sam. It just vanished. It was streamer recovery until the streamer ripped off.
Chad M. was able to re-acquire it and saw it fall tail first. It looked to be only .5 to 0.7 miles out. The tele GPS found it 0.9 miles out. I never would have found it without tracking. The rocket was hidden in the medium height grass and lay flat on the ground. We were less than ten feet from it following the GPS coordinates closely when we finally saw it. We kept looking for the streamer that was not there. Thanks Mike S. And Vic D.for recovery help. Chad's incredible eyesight helped too, but small rockets falling are hard to distance accurately.
Used it to find my 38 mm near min-diameter too. So I am 3 for 3 with it!
I might have to get another one.
Or use the complete Altus Metrum set up. Ask Bdale and Keith...
To use the TeleGPS with only a hand held, (as I do),, the hand held must be capable of receiving APRS packets.
I had an inquiry from someone using it with a non-APRS capable radio. APRS isn't hard, but does take some familiarizing. I highly recommend playing with it a bit before use.
