What's the smallest size NC you can fit a Garmin dog collar into without huge amounts of mods? Can it fit in 2.1 nose cone?
Ron
Taken apart with the ant. turned side ways (if you dont break it) 38MM
I thought (from Mike Konshak's work) that 38mm was just slightly too small. I remember he tried to grind off the corners of the pcb, but either shorted layers or cut traces when he did so.
I'd like to draw up a 38mm housing to hold the bare unit if someone has prints of the pcb outline dimensions. A nice chunk of hogged out delrin would make it almost as sturdy as the original housing. Would be a good practice project in Solidworks.

Fit into mu Cirus Dart body...... 38MM
Unfortunetly a wieght beaking out of the nose at the last launch of my 3" rocket. broke the ant. I have yet to try my luck soldering.
That's great news, as I'm overbuilding a LOC Legacy for the I200 right now, and I'd rather not lose it.

1.5"x1.5"x6.5" is the smallest dimensions. But, you can take the "ears" off where it has screw holes on all 4 corners and make it a bit smaller. I am wrapping mine in thin foam and heat shrinking it to keep the antenna from breaking. You can catch me at the launch to see how it does.... 😛
PS, if you want to see new pictures of the mount, look at Mike's DC20/30 post. I uploaded new pics last night.

So, If I'm careful/creative I can make fit a 38mm min. project. I'm going to try make it up Sat. and poke around to see how people are using them. Is the DC30 any smaller or lighter? It looks like they pulled the GPS antenna out so the battery can hang under the dogs neck instead of the back of the neck like the DC20. Does this change how it can be used for a rocket?
Ron
I don't think even Mike has dissected a DC30 yet. Would be nice if they've shrunk it further or fixed the problem with the antenna connector going the wrong direction (for us anyway).

Ive got a DC-30 showing up tomarrow, and Ill have it in my rocket this weekend. If you each give me a dollar you can look at it! Might even let you touch it for two! 😉 (hey its expensive and ive got to get some of my money back)
Although I wouldnt be suprised if Mike has one this weekend too. 🙂
Awwww shucks, you didn't have to pay to see CiBi's DC20.... That's no fair...
Just watch out for people saying "hey, look over there"
Hey Ken,
there is an elbow you can buy to reposition the antenna. Locally, you can get it from Ham Radio Outlet over on Iliff - west of S. Parker rd (Aurora). If you need one let me know and I'll try to run over there at lunch one day this week.
If there's time, post some pictures of the DC-30 in "as delivered" and "for rocketry" configurations. Throw a ruler in the picture for some scale, or next to a DC-20 for reference.
For my planned re-housing of the DC-20 (or 30), I would probably go with a very short right angle cable to a bulkhead fitting, to isolate the antenna and its associated stresses from the pcba. Anybody got a dimensioned drawing of the pcb outline? I doubt if Garmin would supply such details.
Thanks,
Ken
p.s. I just had a very good phone interview. Hopefully to be followed with a real in-person interview soon. Once re-employed, I'll just have to go buy one of the dog trackers and get on with it!

Well....
I got the DC-30 yesterday. The gps reciever is seperate from the board, on top of the coller. I had to cut it out. The board is narrower (the good part) and the antena screws on separate. The problem is the ant. mount is moulded into the case (probably soldered to the board last)
The last thing is the ant. is longer and I dont see this as a positive thing for us. I do see the the posibility for a more compact assembly for smaller tubes. But considering I have another Dc-20 showing up today I bought for $100.00
as opposed to $185.00, for the Dc-30 I going to attempt to acumulate more DC-20s for a while.

Dang Scott, the roofing business must be good.....
I'll be interested in seeing the new 30. I just hope we have good enough weather to fly this Sat..... I was hoping to send up a couple D12 birds.
