The easiest solution is to make a hole for the existing light. Depending on the manufacture of the electronics they may have remote indicator built in. You CAN transpose the existing LED but I do NOT recommend it. You're asking for problems that may affect it's performance.

Mike, my advice... Since you are using a Missile Works RRC2X then just ask someone to come to the pad with you and verify the beeps. Just make sure that they are hearing the three fast beeps or whatever they should be hearing, since it is one of Jim's altimeters and he is an NCR regular, there is always someone on site at any given launch who knows those altimeters inside and out. I challenge you to find someone in NCR (other then Doug 😉 who doesn't own one, or two, or three, or four for that matter. Everyone is happy to help.

Art's right. Just ask. Putting an LED in the place of a piezo buzzer is possible, but as Doug said, not advised. You'd have to determine the right resistor in series with the LED, and at the very least, have a schematic on hand. Those are always protected and not given out. Blacksky electronics use an LED instead of a buzzer, but compared to the reliability of Jim's electronics, don't go there. I used (and will use again) a blacksky altimeter for my L3 bird, only because it's already on the board and works (but not for the data acquisition I hoped it would provide, just pops things out when it should). BESIDES seeing a flashing LED is much more difficult (and a pain) than listening to a beep, or having someone listen for you. Plus, regardless, it's always good to have a friend around to double check anyway. You've got plenty of friends out there. 😉

It is readily possible to replace an old-style RRC2 or RRC2X on-board LED with a 2 pin header and then extend the LED to the airframe for external viewing. However, this will void the warranty. The new style RRC2X-mini cannot be so modified as the 3 color LED is surface mounted.

Warren is right on both counts. You CAN stick the LED in the airframe by either using a 2-pin header or straight wiring, and the warranty IS voided. Talk to Jim. He da man.
