If you fly a Perfectflight MAWD altimeter, it is important that you know about a serious potential flaw in the device firmware. While the bug is relatively complex, the symptom is not. IF you have a flight that turns in a perfect 20,000' altitude, your altitude is INCORRECT. This altitude reading means your MAWD lost and regained power during flight. This is considered a "feature" by Perfectflight. When downloading data from the MAWD to a computer, you will get an altitude of 20,000' and 4800 samples indicated.

Bummer if you beat the J record and it happens to land on 20,000 feet and 4800 samples. 😉
Warren,
I don't think that's a bug in the firmware, but instead a programmed error code.
In any event - you are correct -it's not an altitude it's beeping out.

I would consider this a "flaw" - yes it is purposefully done, but it is ridiculous. Better it should read out 99,999 feet instead of an altitude within it's ostensible range. Jason Chamberlin turned in a 20K flight a while back and folks commented on the fact that it was perfectly even and the flight - given the motor and bird - shouldn't have been within even a couple thousand feet of that altitude.
My MAWD is still laying out on or buried on or in the plains, so it doesn't affect me although I set my E altitude record with that altimeter. I know I have the 1.20 version of firmware on it. I think it's a great altimeter although I had it fire the apogee charge on the pad 3 times once when it was a bit windy and I had only a single port into the ebay. My Missileworks RRC2X's never did that.

I've had great luck with them, I really like the fact that I can use 10.5v batteries with them and I like the dip switches. Never a problem with mine, and I have pushed one of them to 70+ gees a few times.
Jason's rocket made me wonder about this - he had a GREAT boost, but with a fin can and the length of his rocket, you would not expect 20K. The prevailing thought at the time was that it maxed out at 25K MSL and with the site at 5500' that he must have gotten close to 20K and it maxed out. In retrospect, I think 15K-16K was probably about what he had - which is a terrific boost in and of itself.
