After 4 decent flights on just the central 38mm motor, Excess In Moderation is being called up to fly like it was made to.

It is a 4.5lb LOC Fantom EXL with 6 additional 24mm mounts. Note I said 24. That's the issue. 😕
The initial plan (however poorly researched) 🙄 was to launch on something quick and clean (I300T), quietly coast, then airstart something a little smokier (but still fairly easy to light) 6x cluster of F24W. Problem with this is finding low-current dipped ematch-style igniters that fit in the tiny nozzles. (or a battery pack that could light 6 standard igniters).
Plan B is much more easily done, but riskier. Launch on 6x cluster of F39T (using Tim's Fuddrucker igniters... 100% success in cluster launches on the Suppository), then airstart a Cessaroni Smokey Sam (probably an I212SS or I287SS). I've simmed it out and as long as 4 light (somewhat randomly distributed), it has sufficient velocity off a 6' rail. 3 is sub-optimal. I probably should go with break-wire rather than g-switch detection for the timer, in case of insufficient acceleration to trigger.
Any input would be great, and I'm really looking for input on increasing my odds with ignition on plan B. (scuffing up grains, extra pyrogen dabs, etc. that won't blow a 24mm casing) Also, I'm gonna need to borrow 5 24mm casings (with the usual "clean & return" or replace warranty).
Tim, can you work me a deal on motors for this flight? 6F's, 6 Fuddy's, and an I. This ain't gonna be cheap (for a pre L2 flight).
Thanks all!
Ken
Ken,
I can loan you one 24mm case.

8) A few weeks ago, I had a little (?) private launch here in Delta at the Brown Mud Test Range. There was a a couple of fliers from Telluride there, and they did a trick I have never seen done. They had a 8in rocket with a central 54 with 4 X 29mm around it. I had some Thermite, looks like a small wire inside a thin plastic cover, and we ran it from each of the G80's to the bottom of the central K1200 White Thunder 😀 😀 We touched'er off and all 4 G80's went a-blazin into the Sky, along with the K1200 😀 I would think if we put a dipped E-match into one of the 24's and ran Thermite from the other 5 X 24mm, that when the first 24 went off, it would lite the other 5 motors. If the first one failed, all you would have is a I only flight. We could test this out next month on my 4 X 24 Army Hawk. We could wire it up and launch it on one E-match and see how it works. BTW the Thermite burns very fast. Sounds crazy, right? I bet it will work. 8)
How hard is to get Thermite? Sounds like good stuff.
He means Thermalite - looks kinda like cannon fuse with a thin wire core. Was used for ages as an igniter booster. Now highly regulated.
Thermite is a different material - usually mixed to order from powdered metal and metal oxides. A common mix is Copper Oxide, Ferric Iron Oxide and Aluminum powder. The expert on this is James Russell.

Tim,
Sounds like Plan A might just be back on line. In my case, I don't want the central to light the outboards, but I think we could shield the dipped ematch/Thermalite combo with basic masking tape. The ematch lines would run up the conduit to the timer bay. So far, I haven't had even the slightest scorching of the rear of the rocket with masking tape over the outboard mmts.
I'd love to help set up the 4x F flight of yours (F24W's please?). I think just splicing the dipped ematch with the 4 Thermalite lines in a wad of tape would accurately simulate my situation. I'll supply one 24mm case!
I'd like to do my ground testing for DD on the same bird at the next launch. Anyone up for helping me? I've got ematches, but no BP yet.
BTW, I just bought a full 38mm RouseTech set, so I won't have to mooch them anymore! Paid under $300 with Just Rockets 30% off sale. 😯
Thanks for the help Tim. (And Warren for volunteering a case to the game)

Thermalite sounds about like what you'd need for that 2-stager "hard to light" project! 😀

I'm still interested in experimenting with igniting a E6 with a mini-A, but only after I get the Parrots back in stock (hopefully by the end of the weekend.)
But maybe when I prep the 2-stager at the site I could get some thermalite from Tim to boost my odds?
Ken - I have 2 24mm reloads casings (maybe 3?). You are welcome to borrow them. Let me know which launch so I don't forget to bring them.
