Trying to plan for the future...I think.
For a person trying to get a level one. And knowing that a LEUP is a good thing to get...
I believe a Type 3 magazine will do just fine. Budget in mind.
1. Is that correct?
I have read in the forum that U.S Explosive Storage is a good place to purchase one.
2. Is there a place in Colorado to purchase one? Trying to save freight.
I am investigating Wyoming. You would think it would be easy to find here. Right..
Thanks Mike
Type 3 is for carrying the "explosives." Type 4 (and above--if you have the money and room) is for actual storage in either a detached garage or an attached garage with an hour firewall--hope that's right; it's in the L2 test. Local ordinances may vary. 🙂 Here's the US Explosives link: http://www.usexplosive.com/
Ask James Russell what he uses before you buy anything. He seems to be the most informed in the cluib.
Mike,
I'd hang onto the $$ and see how things shape up. No way are we all going to pony up 300 or more, nor even if we could, have a situation that would support a Leup in the first space. There will be other options. Even if we lose in court. But for sure talk to James, and I am assuming this will be a major feature at the jan mtg.

We're not going to get closure on this phase of things until at least March if what I've read on the Tripoli forum is any indication. I'm not spending a dime on a LEUP or magazine even then as I doubt I'd get storage here at my house and I'll be damned if I'll apply for a LEUP if I can't have storage. I'll just continue to do so-called "sponsored" flights where the motor vendor retains legal ownership and I just pay for the flight service. If things eventually shake out in our favor, this will all be a moot point... at least until ATF gets some pet congresscrook to introduce legislation specifically giving them control over AP.

I'm dragging my feet, too. We'll have an idea by March, and a definitive answer next July... at least that's the current timeline.
Oh-Tay
... Panky 🙂 Mike, getting a LEUP isn't wrong; it's a good thing. But getting all the backup equipment NOW probably isn't wise, until we know what will be required. Ken Plattner is getting his without storage and all materials consumed on site, which is a good way to go for now. You can always get storage added on to your LEUP. At least, if we lose the war, you guys will still be able to fly. Me, I'm still hoping for the best.
I think there is a real chance that "sponsored flights" will come under scrutiny. It may indeed come to a point where you have to have a LEUP to even handle loads. That is why I originally got mine (I don't have nor do I want storage). Given the $$$$$$$$$$ that we all spend in the hobby, the cost of a LEUP isn't that big of a deal.
Cost has nothing to do with it. It's the invasion of privacy and exposure to government regulation that offends me.

Everything we do in life is regulated to some extent, if not entirely. I don't like the regulation at all for many reasons, but if it is to be regulated, I'm going to be legal. I want to buy a big batch of DaveyFires, but I can't without a LEUP. I want to fly at LDRS in Texas, but technically I can't buy a motor in Texas without a LEUP. Personally, I see more reasons to have a permit than not.
Ken, without proper storage, CAN you buy Daveyfires? Technically, can't take them home, must be used on site... ? With a LEUP, you can definitely buy any motor your certification allows in Texas... but it must be used on site. Then again, I believe James said that e-matches, which I believe Daveyfires are, are not regulated, even under the new regulations, just squibs & "igniters" are. But it's also my understanding that you can't buy ANYTHING without a LEUP, unless it is a sponsored flight on site. See how confusing this is? New World Order... work, consume, obey. 😥
My point is, buying any type of ignitor on-line for example requires a LEUP. Doesn't really matter if it's a DaveyFire or not: RE QuickBurst and others. They won't sell you any ignitor without a permit. As far as storage, I can't answer that.
Agreed. You need a LEUP to buy just about anything... but do you need storage to buy? This is what Warren was talking about... let things play out. Those of you with LEUP's will be ahead of the game regardless of what actually happens. James Russell, John Wilke, etc. who got them early on were wise. I most likely will apply for mine in January, because I want one for other reasons as well. I, too, want to be legal; that's my nature. The only thing that bothers me, is why the BATFE is after a safe hobby? According to the news, there are terrorists IN this country; why are they going after an aggressive road flare of a substance and wasting resources that need to be applied to REAL hazards. THAT scares me.
...why the BATFE is after a safe hobby?...
It's all PR. It is like taking nail clippers at airport security. The powers that be can claim that they are doing something that the public might see as a threat.
Unfortunately, AP motors are just as threatening as nail clippers.
Yep. 😉
