Rocketeers,
I am the Rocket Shoot Superintendent for the Boulder County Fair and am in need of a judge for this year's 4-H Rocket Shoot to be held on July 29th from 8:00 AM to approximately 1:00 PM in the North Parking lot of the Boulder County Fairgrounds.
We generally have about 30 4-H youth between the ages of 8 and 18 who launch their rockets as part of their 4-H Rocketry project. They are judged on rocket construction, flight and recovery, and range safety. Myself and a number of parents handle all (well most) of the logistics and supply all the launch pads, flags, tables, etc. (last year Big Joe brought the launcher). We just need someone (or 2) that is knowledgeable in the field of rocketry, likes kids and is willing to volunteer some time to assist 4-H youth. Boulder County does supply a small stipend as a small incentive and I will provide the donuts 😉
Last year Joe and Art helped us out, but I have had no luck tracking down either of them! If you know how I might get in touch with either of them, or would like to help or know of someone that would - please let me know.
I can be reached at:

Thank you,

Joe and Art both regularly monitor this site so I'm sure they'll touch base. I do know that Joe will be out of town from mid-July through mid-August so someone else will need to step up to the plate in Joe's place. If I weren't moving August 1st, I'd volunteer right now. If no one else suitable turns up, I'll definitely step up (and risk the wrath of my wife) since the kids definitely deserve it. I live less than a mile from the fairgrounds in any event.
Warren
Kevin, Id be more than happy to help out. Just let me know. Like Warren, I live about a mile (maybe two) from the fairgrounds. I can also provide some launch equipment if needed.
Send me a PM if I can help.
Thanks.
Ken
As Warren states, I am out of state those dates but I think you're looking for Joe Cowan, also out of touch at the moment. 4H has been a huge supporter of rocketry and we are as well. I'm sure someone will step up and help.
Kevin, good to hear from you, hope all is well on your end. I won't be able to make it this year, I am out of town with work at the end of July. I did mention pass it along to big Joe though and he did seem interested.
Thanks,
Art
Warren, Joe, Ken and Art,
Thank you for the quick (and helpful) reply.
I did indeed mean Joe Cowan (I wasn't sure if using last names was appropriate). As Art mentioned, he and Joe basically ran the range for me last year. They set such a good precedent that I'm hopeful that we can keep it up. We've had good judges in the past, just not with the laevel of interest and passion that you true rocketeers possess.
As I mentioned, I need an individual (preferable 2) to judge the kids. We have 4 very functional stands that a parent had fabricated a few years back. Joe and Art brought a launch controller (as we now have kids that show up with cluster engine rockets - thanks to FlisKits 😉 - that proved useful.
I realize that it is a weekday and we try to get setup fairly early (we generally arrive at 7:00 or so, so we can get started before it gets too hot), so I understand (and appreciate) the commitment to attending this event.
I did not expect such a quick and overwhelming response - thank you - so you have caught we a bit unawares. As Joe Cowan helped out last year, he has the first dibs (sounds kinda backwards doesn't it?), Art was his assistant I guess, but has already stated that he can't make it. Warren has a commitment that day and we don't want any unhappy wives. So Ken, if I don't here from Joe Cowan in the next couple of days, I'd love to have you. A launch controller would be helpful as well. Mainly, I need a contact person for the 4-H extension office so that they can send out a contract.
Art, thank you for the reply as well. If Joe is interested, ask him to contact me. Perhaps he and Ken would be willing to work together?
Once again - thanks you guys!
Kevin Taberski
No problem and good luck this year, last year was a hoot!
Art
Kevin, I do have a launch controller. It's a good one, but is designed for launching one rocket at a time, although it could be modified very easily to launch more than one rocket at a time if needed and it also has plenty of juice for clusters.
I'd be more than happy to work with Joe C. so just let me know what you decide.
Thanks. Looking forward to it.
Ken.
Don't forget to bring a couple big rockets, the kids get a kick out of it!
