Today I 'Ground Tested' My main deployment.
WOW.
I knew I had to test. The rocket had been at the paint shop
for five weeks. My chute just came in.
Today was the day. Looking at the internet charge size ranged
from 9.22 grams. To 21.4 grams. I knew the 21 was a little
large. My test was with 15 grams or FFFg. WOW. I blew the cone
into my garage with a 5lb chute behind it. Sounded like a body
hitting the garage. (what ever that sounds like). Second test with
11 grams was pretty good. Just a little large.
www.vernk.com suggested 1 gram per 6" of air frame. With 56" of
air frame it came out to 9.3 grams. I will be going with 10 to 10.5
grams. His chart was right on target.
Got to know a couple of My neighbors a little better. I gave a
warning to all but one. She thought Her Son had blown something
up in the garage. A real nice lady. Will probably be at the launch.
Anyway. My point to this post is. All the sites said 'ground test'
'ground test' 'ground test'. Every one that I have ever talked
to in the NCR club said to 'ground test'
There is a good reason for that.
My rocket is ready to fly. All the painting I had planned will not be.
You better believe there's good reason for it! Ha! Man, I've only used 7.5 grams as my top charge... bet that WAS loud! 😯
21g is a LOT! We had 11g in UprOar and that was... energetic 8)
I had to laugh about 'getting to know your neighbors better'. I can relate...
Yeah, how many car alarms did you set off, Mike?
Ernie was testing his L3 setup at Hartsel and I had my foot bracing the backend of a 16+ gram ( I think it was 19 g) charge. I call it the shotgun shell charge. Blew his nosecone through a sheet and pulled off the middle airframe section. I was *very* surprised.
