I know there are some fans of the Rocket Rage chutes out there. I need to buy a chute... I'd like to use the same chute in both a 3" and 4" project.
Depending on hardware, the 3" will have a burnout weight of about 14# and my 4" bird (under construction) will have a burnout weight of about 19#.
The chutes come in a 15# and a 30# size, though those sizes are based on a 22fps descent rate, which I think is too high, especially given our site elevations.
SO.... does anyone have a 30# (RRQS30) that I could look at before I purchase? More importantly, will that chute fit comfortably into a 3" airframe?
Thanks,
JW
JW, Things to consider when doing just about any chutes (and of course you probabaly allready know this) but with Rocket Rage they are also figured at sea level atmospheres as well as having the specific rating that they do with 18-22 ft per seconds. I would highly recomend the 30lb model for what you want to do. With our altitude and thinness of air as well as your weights you show I would belive the RRQ30 will bring your 15lbs down around 10 to 12fps (if not even slower) and the 20lbs around the 15 to 18 fps. I would be willing to bet that even the RRQ50 could fit in your 3" tube as they pack ever so small and with a little packing ingenuity. I have no doubt the RRQ30 will fit just fine. Im sure even my RRQ70 will fit with ease in the 4". When I pack my 6" it still has room for a couple more.
Also to note. That when I did my L3 flight burnout weight was 56lbs the chutes a RRQ70 and the ARTS recorded a decent of 14 fps.
Cool. Thanks, Conway. If anyone has a RRQS30, I'd still like to pack it just so I can see if my current shock cords, etc. fit. I typically use tubular Kelvar, which takes a LOT of room. I'd like to play with an RRQS30 for 5 minutes before I order...
I have both a 15 and a 50 that you could mess with...
I have to agree with conway on this as well - the 30 would be the best choice for this.
I'll be using the RRQ70 for my L3 next launch, in a near 50# rocket (fully loaded, so less without the propellant, obviously; don't want to look at my documentation anymore). I think I calcuated a 12-14 fps descent rate. I took it out today to try to pack it; don't do it alone, in wind. Supposed to be able to fit it into a 4" tube when properly packed. Gonna take my flight crew to help me hold 'er down and pack it. Those chutes are so cool! Ed Dawson used one for his L3 at MHMudhem.
I have the RRQS30 I could bring to the June launch for you to use. Fly it and measure the descent rate and see if it is what you like.

Doug and Chris, thank you both for your kind offers. My 3" rocket is being repaired now, and I'm not sure it will be flightworthy by the June launch... but the main recovery section is intact, and I will bring that, which will allow me to see if I can make everything fit. If it does, I'll order a 30# version for my very own...
Doug, glad to hear you are coming back up for June- Joe H. told me that you were going to be visiting us again. Lets hope for better weather this time!!!!!!

I'll be up in June for EX day. I can't make the commercial launch, but with any luck there'll still be some fun stuff 🙂
Chris, is your dad going to be taking pictures on Saturday, the commercial day and NAR competition? Sorry about drifting off-topic. Love those RR chutes... back on topic.
No - he'll be down here taking pictures of my High School Graduation ceremony...
Sorry about that...
I wish I could see your launch...
That's okay, Chris. Gee, you'd think a rocket meet would take precedence over his son's oncie-in-a-lifetime high school graduation. Congrats, Chris! From what I've heard, Sunday will be NO disappointment!
As I understand it Bruce is that Nadine will be there on both Saturday and Sunday. So you may very well yet have some pics of your L3 shot. As far as Sundays Research launch I started a thread HERE

With info and places for people to post what they will be flying. Please keep in mind that this day for participation is only open to TRA members in good standing L2 and higher. It will be under actual TRA research rules.
Sorry for the side track. Just a little note. Back to the Rocket Rage chute discussion.
