Part of the NCR rocketry experience is when members attend and fly at other venues beside NCR and it would be nice to reflect the 'extracurricular' activities in the launch logs:
1) To show NCR represented at other sites.
2) To have a common place for members to see their launch history, besides what is flown at NCR events.
So, my question and proposal , is to have a common event bucket that we can submit launches at other venues, like LDRS, Tripoli Colorado and NAR sanctioned regionals.
I guess this is directed toward Warren.
Can we add specific non-NCR venues to the launch log event bucket so that the rocket launches can be submitted and added to that database?
A precedent was set before as I noticed a UROC event listed. I have 87 such flights that I would like to add to my log. Joe said he'd be willing to input the data if he a place to puit them in.
I can assist with this if given access to the website, in a password protected directory.
Thanks
I applaud the idea, but the problem is one of resources. Specifically, we don't have the resources to:
A) Enter the launch log data into the system - Joe is the only authorized person able to enter launch log data. We could add someone or someone(s) to that list, but we sure don't have the volunteers we need to do what already needs to be done, much less add more things to the list.
B) We don't have the programmer bandwidth (again volunteer) to re-write the launch log entry code in such a way as to make it available to club members to enter their own data.
C) We don't have the storage capacity on our webhost to have an open-ended launch log capability. For long I've wanted to host videos from our launches, but between storage and bandwidth requirements, we'd have to probably bump our hosting fees 300% to make that happen with the level of traffic the site generates.
This question has come up before and Joe's response to it has been (not to put words into his mouth - hopefully he'll chime in here) that people are responsible for tracking their own launch data. We provide the launch logs on here for a few VERY specific purposes: APCP bonfire contest, Frequent Flyer contest, LCO contest, 1/2/3/4/5/6 Mile High clubs, and as a quick way for Joe to extract the reporting data that the FAA and Tripoli want to receive. Convenient as it is, it isn't here as a service to the members except for those purposes.
Now of course if I had unlimited storage and two full time PHP programmers we could do a LOT of things with the site that we're not doing and I'd personally love to see them done. Too many of them though rely on volunteer labor to make it happen and we just don't have the volunteers. I'm personally not much of a PHP programmer so we have a guy named Jeremiah who does much of the the custom programming that's been done to the site over the last 2 years. (I do overall architecture, content management and administration largely.) However, he doesn't have the bandwidth to get even 10% of our current list of bug fixes and new features done between his work and family life. I'd certainly accept more PHP programmer volunteers if they were available, particularly if they had experience working with PHPNuke, the content management system that the NCR site is built on.
Sigh, good ideas all, but just not possible with the resources we have available.
