Guys, I have brought in some ProLine 4100 laminating resin if anyone needs some really good epoxy. This is what I used on "Rough Draft" a year ago (mach 2.6, surface mounted fins) and it held together splendidly. I used this material for the construction, the fillets, and wetting of the fabric on Rough Draft. It was the only epoxy in the entire build. It is a 5:1 by weight product. I use a $9 Harbor Freight scale when I weigh this material out.
I'm building my very own KestreL now, and I'm using that for everything as well.
A quart set of ProLine 4100 is $45.99 - which is WAY less than what I paid for my last quart set of West Systems... and this stuff is definitely better. I also have a pint set for $26.99. My quantity on hand is limited, though I can surely get more. I'd rather not ship liquids via UPS so I can bring it to the next launch if anyone is interested -

How does that compare to the stuff Mr. Fiberglass use to sell?
He had pretty cheap prices comparitivley speaking.
If you scratch building a large rocket (tubes and fins), $45.00 a quart can get expensive.
this is the stuff

Scott, I'm not familiar with the material you linked. BTW, when I say "Quart", that is the size of the larger can, it actually yields 1.2 quarts when you combine the hardener with the epoxy.
Two thoughts here. First, I bought a similar-sized set of West Systems from Fort Collins Plastics and it was over $70 (vs. $45.99 for the ProLine). The second thing is that I've also built a half-dozen major projects with my quart set of ProLine and I still have well over half of it left. I applied 6 sets of tip-to-tip glass on one project alone.
My hunch is a quart would easily do a dozen rockets, probably a lot more. That works out to a few bucks a rocket - roughly the cost of a bulkplate 8)
I will say that I am very careful with the stuff, measuring out ONLY as much as I need.
I'm interested, just a quick question. I found the data sheet which states a pot life of about 20 minutes. Did you feel that this was enough time to comfortably perform the tip to tip application? Also I have noticed with fast curing epoxies that they must be mixed in small batches or else they overheat, was this ever an issue? Thanks for sharing.
The pot life is more than 20 minutes... I think it is probably more like 40-60 minutes - but then again, I typically do the work in my basement where it is cooler. Also remember that pot life decreases CONSIDERABLY if you are doing more volume per cup.
Warren and I laid up multiple layers of material (on a 75mm project) and we had ample time to fiddle with vacuum bags without any issue. Chad and I also laid up multiple layers (on a 54mm project) - no issues there.
This material does have to be mixed by weight, not volume. A cheapo gram scale is best. I bought this one for $9 a year ago http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=93543 I now see it is $19.99 😡
Guys, I'm sold out of expoxy for a couple of weeks (thanks for the orders I rec'd). I will have more in a couple weeks.
This stuff is terrific. Those of you who ordered will be way very pleased....
Anyone else who is interested can ping me on a private message here or at 3dogsrocketry@comcast.net
Thanks,
JW3DR
Allrighty... I am getting a lot of orders for ProLine. Enough to where I'm going to have to order more. I'll do this the middle of next week so if you are interested, let me know before then. Also - S.E., D.K., and M.S. - I have your orders and I have inventory to cover you three and. I will bring your 4100 to the April launch.
Anyone else interested, let me know via 3dogsrocketry@comcast.net
Many thanks,
JW
The pro line says to mix it 5 to 1 woth the hardener. Is that correct??
Waited 2 days for it to cure, finally took the fin can home and put it in the oven. Still a little gummy.
Ive gota admit I tried a 3 to 1 and a 2 to 1 ratio. Seamed to more what I am use to. 2 or 3 hour cure. 🙄
Is this a finishing resin?
20 parts hardener to 100 parts resin (measured by weight). I've never had an issue. Still not curing?
This is the stuff Warren and I used on "Rough Draft" and it dried dandy. I have also used it on my own KestreL just this week, no worries...
Mitch - have you used any of yours?
Let me know if you did the deal in the ratio above. If there are any issues, I'll certainly replace it. I *LOVE* this stuff and I'm very sorry if you are having issues. We'll get it squared up!

John, is this the Pro Line from the same company as West Systems?
John, is this the Pro Line from the same company as West Systems?
I don't think it is. I know the same company that makes West also makes stuff called Pro-Set (it's what I use, and it works great), but I don't think they make Pro Line.
