I’m in favor. I have been meaning to bring this up myself but I keep forgetting. But let’s not make the mistake that Mach Madness is about to make by paying any attention to baro-based velocity estimates. From the data… Read more»

Not everybody needs really high temperature epoxy, but if you do, here’s some more info on the Cotronics offerings:Cotronics has a black paste epoxy (4525) that may be related (identical?) to the ProLine epoxy discussed above. They also carry laminating… Read more»

Bummer if you beat the J record and it happens to land on 20,000 feet and 4800 samples.

Adrian replied to the topic "The Parrot and John Wilke's K altitude record" – 6 years, 7 months ago
By the way, I looked back at the data and confirmed that the AGL for John’s flight was 24,724 feet, when calculated in the traditional way based on the standard atmosphere.

OK, more questions from a non-engineer Shocked the blue line seems to be essentially peaking at just below 25K, with some bigger spikes. The 25,724′ would seem to be such a spike. Isn’t that an anomaly (“noise”?) and if you… Read more»

I put in a small (2 or 5, I don’t remember which) degree initial flight angle, mostly because there was some measured drag acceleration at apogee. You can see from the Cd plot that the assumed Cd shoots way up… Read more»

I’ve been checking out the data from John’s K shot around touchdown, and I agree that any response based on the the baro sensor would have to be delayed long enough that it wouldn’t protect anyone’s paint job. But I… Read more»

Thanks, Dave, if you read the forum!Too bad about the missing fin can. I guess I didn’t friction fit it onto the motor tight enough. But I’m sure looking forward to checking out the data, even if it wasn’t a… Read more»

Adrian replied to the topic "19th and 20th launch. ?????" – 6 years, 7 months ago
Sounds like a fun design problem. I could program a Parrot for the smarts to do the release after it hits the ground. On the mechanical side, on NASA programs we commonly use a split spool or a split nut… Read more»

Great teasers, Chris. The wide-angle shot of (John’s?) rocket on top of that enormous straight column of smoke is a work of art.

Very cool, Warren. Thanks for putting that together. Just imagine having to design these rockets and facilities to go from the rocket laying empty on its side to launching to space in less time than it takes the Russian nukes… Read more»

One of these days, maybe someone will make an altimeter that has a USB port on the thing so you can program it with a Palm or a laptop using a nice little graphical interface. The Parrot’s almost there. It’s currently… Read more»

Tim, could I ask you to drop off an H268 reload and a couple of the new 130 Ns AT G80s with someone? I don’t think I’m going to attend the flight on the 12th, and I’d like to keep… Read more»

Thanks, Warren. I look forward to flying a Parrot together with a GPS unit to the highest possible altitude.

Fascinating. I thought I read on some sites that they were. The Parrot altimeters are all definitely individually calibrated against a NIST-traceable standard. At two temperatures.
