This bird was found last month in just about the exact location I thought it should be, which I had scoured in June. Amazing how easy it is to find a lost rocket when the grass has dried up and… Read more»

Are you using shear pins? What is your expected maximum altitude with this bird? Supersonic flight? Any other significant mass objects in the nose?I've not often vented payload bays, as I do use shear pins more often that not. I… Read more»

Very nice Doug. Thank you for all the photos!I recently was introduced to a ~$100 camera that looks like a periscope. It’s small, high video rate, remotely managed via cell phone, and looks like it will mount into a ~1″… Read more»

Thanx Bear. I’m thinking this is the easiest approach, even if it doesn’t readily allow one to dial in the weight at the launch – one can just set for worst case (largest) motor.

Thanx Ken – the Kestrel is exactly what I am working on …T-nuts work well for a number of rocket things. In a minimum diameter rocket, I’m find there is just enuf clearance between airframe and motor casing to use… Read more»

Let me poke at this a bit ..If for example I thread a bolt through a tapped (or heli-coiled) flash hole, this seals the forward closure, so I’m not sure how exhaust would shoot up into the bird, provided that… Read more»

Yep, I guess epoxy comes to the rescue again, doesn’t it. Maybe even at the flight line. It would be interesting to pull test an eyebolt to see how strong such a joint would be.I guess the other option along… Read more»

At MHM last month, I believe the air frame did not separate at apogee, and the bird came in hot. Main deployed at ~ 800′ and the harness failed. I found the nosecone and main chute about 600 yards South… Read more»
