Pistons defintely are the way to go, I’ve switched and won’t go back. I still use a chute protector to help me pack the chute into the piston and make it nice and neat.Edward

I could see that, however on my first L3 attempt my main went off while the rocket was still going about 300 mph and the nosecone came off and the parachute came out, making a mess of things.Edward

I crashed my first L1 rocket even after ground testing deployed the parachute perfectly twice! After that I switched to pistons and have been a very very happy camper. My friend Henry (Hahn) came up with the split piston for his… Read more»

edward replied to the topic "Epoxying FG fins to FG motor tube?" – 5 years, 11 months ago
From a thermodynamic standpoint putting the slot between two fins makes sense, but I figured that it actually would be best to line it up with a fin root to counteract the moment that all of that flowing propellant generates…. Read more»

Paper would probably be best, less dense, more air pockets. Just depends on your preferences. Now, we are all worried about this weakening the fins – how many rockets have failed by this method? My guess would be zero. I’ve… Read more»

The maximum temp that the motor is allowed to reach is 392 F. I don’t think there are many motors that get that hot. As for heat it will get warmest in the lower 1/3 of the motor mount -… Read more»

edward replied to the topic "BP viability vs time" – 5 years, 11 months ago
You store you BP in a can and keep it dry. You store your e-matches the same. So, if you store your pre-made charge in a dry environment then I don’t see the difference between storing them separately. I’ve used… Read more»

My friend (whom I built my first tower with) designed an adjustable tower that used 4″ tube (8′ long) that had ends that were on cams so you could adjust them to the diameter and lock down. It had a… Read more»

edward replied to the topic "Launch Tower Span 13.25 – 9' tall – 98 mm( 4 inch ) availabl" – 5 years, 11 months ago
While rails and rods are fairly linear in their expense curve, towers get much more expensive as the diameter of the rocket and fin span diameter increases. What may be a $50 tower for 38mm may turn into a $200… Read more»
