Congrats to you guys for taking on an incredible project. Sorry it didn’t work out this time, but I’ll bet you’ll be back with another attempt. The coordination of skill sets, schedules, etc. on something like that is astounding.
No one was hurt, no fires were started, and most everyone that was involved is probably a lot better flyer today as a result of participating in the project. Against that backdrop, you had great success!
As a follow-up to my earlier posting, I’d like to try and gauge interest in “built” rockets. I basically don’t want to haul them to the meeting if there isn’t any interest.
I have a couple KestreLs, a minimum diameter 4″ rocket… some minimum diameter 38’s (mostly or all glass) plus some projects that were started but never finished.
PM or email me if you want more details.
Thanks!
JW
I wish I could help – my skills are not up this alley. That said – a hearty THANKS to Warren for getting this site to where it is. He’s plowed a lot ground that many of us take for granted. First beer is on me at the annual meeting, Warren –
I guess I was a bit shocked at the price tag as well…. nearly double Hubble (and we can’t run up there and fix or upgrade like we could for Hubble). Much of this mission is devoted to discerning if there ever was life on Mars. A very large part of me couldn’t care less if there ever was life on Mars – or anywhere else in the cosmos, for that matter. I can’t remember who said it, but I’ll paraphrase here – ‘if there is other life out there, then that is awesome. If we are alone in the universe? Then that is awesome.’
I sure hope someone armed the altimeter 😀
John, I want to qualify my “you can’t push the tubing hard enough to make it fail” comment…. If you have a very tall rocket or a 2-stage that has a bad interstage coupler, all bets are off. That said, many of us have put astounding strain on glass airframes and they are generally fine… I’ve flown N’s in minimum diameter glass, no problem.
Several of us have also put J570s in 38mm rockets that weighed about 1 lb. and they were just fine. If that same rocket was 6 feet tall with a bunch of joints – then that is a different deal…
