That should be a good choice. G10 fins might be a good idea, although wood would work.

Sounds like a plan, although I vastly prefer the 38mm H123 to the H180. The longer burn is nice, and the wider and shorter case is easier to clean. Either one will be nice. Will you be at the November… Read more»

Chris LaPanse replied to the topic "who has "don't blink"?" – 6 years, 1 month ago
Nope – I too heard about it, but nothing further.I’d love to see the case in it, for a couple of reasons. One, that was my case, and if it is salvageable, I’ll take the forward closure (it’s plugged) and… Read more»

Well I’m in deep shit… I’ve been planning flights at 90-95% of waiver altitude including my last couple proposed flights… certified motors to be sure though.WarrenNote that the requirement can be waived in some cases, and only applies to research… Read more»

As long as I have at least 3 inches of guidance straight up, I’ll be fine

Will there definitely be a tower at the November launch?I will be making my SSS attempt there, and will need one…

Chris LaPanse replied to the topic "Are you ready?" – 6 years, 1 month ago
I’m frantically finishing up my deuce – the fins just went on last night, get filleted tonight, then get tip to tip reinforcement during the week. The e-bay is close to finished as well, and it should get the wiring… Read more»

Nope – requires too much current. I’m sure you will be able to get some e-matches on site, though that eliminates any testing beforehand…

So John, any chance I can borrow the nutsert device sometime between now and oktoberfest? Sounds like a great way to attach the E-bay, and I want to try it.

Chris LaPanse replied to the topic "Speaking of pistons…" – 6 years, 1 month ago
I have used pistons both ways, for various reasons (the upside down one, the way that the website promotes as “stable” was actually an accident), and I can say that regardless of orientation, I have never had any problems with… Read more»

My BBX uses pistons, and they work perfectly every time.Honestly, they are very similar to those in smaller birds – just keep the inside of the rocket relatively clean, and you’ll be fine.

Chris LaPanse replied to the topic "Motor Retainers" – 6 years, 1 month ago
Yes, Aeropacks are made for 29mm, and they would be my retainer of choice. Alternatively, the threaded slimline is a great choice, or one could go with the simple Kaplow Clips. Friction fitting is still an option as well, though… Read more»

Chris LaPanse replied to the topic "Animal Motor Works AMW versus Aerotech AT" – 6 years, 1 month ago
I don’t know about 30k, but you can easily see the smoke from an AMW motor (tracking smoke) through at least 25k…The rocket may be harder to spot, but the smoke trail will be there.

Ok, I’ll take your word for it then…I only saw one cato, and I know I saw at least 2 successful flights, but I could have easily missed some other catos.I will agree with you though – I have aerotech,… Read more»

Pretty sure only one M1850 catod, and many had safe flights…I’ve flown both, and I’ll stand the exact opposite of other opinions here – at least regarding the 38mm AMW, I’ll clean 10 aerotech motors if I can avoid one… Read more»

Chris LaPanse replied to the topic "Drogue chute sizing" – 6 years, 1 month ago
In all honesty, I wouldn’t be that concerned about maintaining exactly 50ft/s. It’s perfectly fine to be above or below that by a considerable margin, and your rocket will work fine regardless. Just find a suitably large streamer, such as… Read more»

I use a Skyangle 20 for a drogue on my 14lb, 4 inch rocket, and I am planning on using a skyangle 36 on my upcoming 20-25lb project. Honestly, I would lean on the small side of those estimates, or… Read more»
