It has rained about .8″ here in Fort Collins, but we’ll need several more days of rain like this if we want to lessen the fire danger. It only takes a single day of wind to erase and entire day… Read more»

On a slightly bigger rocket (volume wise) I used 1 gram for the drogue and then 2 grams for the main.Edward

18 PSI? STP is ~14.7 PSI. To have a difference of 18 PSI you’d have to either be sucking quite a bit or blowing really hard.EdwardSarcasm aside:Atmospheric Pressure at 5,000′ is ~12.2 PSI, at 30,000′ it is ~4.4 PSI. That… Read more»

Shear pins + a vent hole.On my L3 I had an issue of the main decided to leave at drogue deployment so I had to ground test quite a bit. I ended up with 6-32 shear pins and a 1/16″… Read more»

That is basically what the o-rings in my design are doing. I add about .25″ total length to my e-bay for having two o-rings added on. I also chose o-rings because they are available in many sizes.Edward

edward replied to the topic "rubber anchor" – 5 years, 11 months ago
What are your tolerances on the other rings? 1/4″ o-ring is very very big and is much harder to compress.I have made a 3″ version where the o-ring was a -232 (3.012 x .139 x 2.734) For that one I… Read more»

Here is a .pdf of my design. I’ve crumpled a 3″ tube using my car to pull against it and it didn’t slip 🙂 Also – you can bulge fiberglass tube if you don’t size the caps right and compress… Read more»

What is on the other side of your all thread? I find for short lengths (<1" long) I trust inset hex set screws. You can tighten them down with an allen wrench and then screw what you want onto that.Obligatory… Read more»

edward replied to the topic "38mm carbon fiber tube" – 5 years, 11 months ago
38mm is a very easy size to get, 1.5″ OD tubing. Alreco has tons in stock, if you make cases you want .083″ wall thickness, otherwise I’ve sure he has .062 and .125 there.Edward

I think it would be fine with the mass involved. I’ll just hold it between centers and spin slowly to start.Edward

edward replied to the topic "Silicone nosecone mold" – 5 years, 11 months ago
Adrian,I have some old resins, I’ll dig them out. Maybe at a launch we could do a transfer and I could spin one and see how it works.Edward

Adrian,I think it would be as strong. You could put some epoxy in the nosecone, then add the sleeve and spin. The nice thing is that it keeps it all against the edges. You can go as thick as a… Read more»

Very nice Adrian. You should try spincasting them. I’m sure a chopped carbon fiber layup would be as strong and smooth. Tungsten is used to weight golf club heads – you know, the new space ship flying saucer drivers.Edward

edward replied to the topic "75mm vs 98mm" – 5 years, 11 months ago
The insulation on 98mm will probably be thicker as the burn times are longer. Also the casting tubes/liner are more expensive. And the cases have more aluminum in them and have to be stronger to resist the larger hoop and… Read more»
