I just bought a new towing-capable vehicle so I am once again on the list of options for the club. I still have to get the wiring harness and plug taken care of, but starting in May I should be… Read more»

I only say that because one of my 5 L2 attempts failed because of a missing seal disk and o-ring… and I needed to buy a new case and forward closure because of it.

Don’t forget the seal disk and o-ring. It’s quite spectacular when you do.

I seem to remember some NAR guys back when I was a kid did an underwater launch of a couple model rockets. There was an article I believe in an old Model Rocketry magazine. Harry Stein might have been involved.

Ah, the EZI-65… I cratered at least 2 of them in my quest for L2 and one other besides. Great rocket…not much luck though for me with them.

Take your time, Keep It Simple, don’t rush yourself or get “Go Fever”. I flew my L1 first try… but it took me 5 tries to L2 because of: A) I was way psyched and I most definitely had Go… Read more»

Yeah, John has always been a single altimeter guy. Shocked me when he TAPped my L3. Back in the day you could do your L3 with a single altimeter, but no more. Redundancy is a requirement now. When we did the… Read more»

We’ve definitely had TAPS leave because other hobbies were less expensive. Think Al McBride and his sudden interest in Formula 1 race cars… (far from cheap).

A commercial P from CTI… I wonder if it is based on the Tomahawk booster that they sell the US Navy to kick the cruise missiles out of the launch cells. At one point Dr. J got me the spec… Read more»

Yeah, once you have your L3, you don’t need anyone to check out your bird other than the RSO. That is not to say you should do that. I had built several L3 and larger birds prior to building my… Read more»

I use both forged eyebolts and stainless steel eyenuts (from a sail boat supply place) – what I use depends on the application. My more recent projects have all used eyenuts to be honest. I now prefer to use a… Read more»

Warren B. Musselman replied to the topic "Vacuum pressure" – 5 years, 11 months ago
Doug is right, the main difference would be the amount of epoxy forced out of the fabric into the breather material or sucked into the epoxy trap if you use one. Lower vacuum pressure reduces the compression on the layers… Read more»

Warren B. Musselman replied to the topic "Vacuum pressure" – 5 years, 11 months ago
The chief issue is our altitude here. That limits the maximum amount of vacuum you can pull. At my altitude (7000′), I can get just a hair over 26″ of Hg on the vacuum gauge when I get everything really… Read more»

I’m with Ken on this – I’ve gotten a great deal of advice from the little PPG paint shop on Main in Longmont as well as decent pricing. They also stock wet/dry sand paper from 80 grit up through 1800… Read more»

Just remember that oil and epoxy don’t mix… and surfaces with oil on them WILL separate from epoxy. I have experience (unfortunately) with this. Do the epoxy work on bare material that has been cleaned with denatured alcohol or acetone…. Read more»
